As I continue my incredibly pricey transmission project...I finally got around to putting the QT bellhousing up on the 225. The 130 tooth flywheel fits nicely, BTW....and here is what the runout looks like in thousandths of an inch. At .022" out, I wouldn't expect a lot of good behavior out of this setup. But I gotta wonder how many people buy an aftermarket bell and never check it...

I never used to, but I do now.
What flywheel are you using?

Ummm...I'm not sure. lol. It's a new, steel, 'race' flywheel, 130 tooth, 30 lbs. I bought it so long ago the box fell apart and was tossed so I no longer recall who made it...but it was a Schiefer or McLeod or Hays. My money is on Schiefer.

I should add that it doesn't help matters that QT machines the bell dowel holes for the .500" size. This is the 'Ford' standard and is .004" sloppier than the Mopar .496" dowel. So....not only do you need an offset dowel, you need one that has two different diameters....

Yeesh. I always dial mine in. Good to know about the dowel holes - shim stock.

I made some offset dowels with different diameters. The thing is....the QT bell dowel holes, unlike a stock bell, are blind. That means you can't see them once the bell is in place, and you can't turn them even if you buy the kind of pins that have a provision for turning. Luckily, the Slant 6 (unlike V8's) has through-holes for the dowels. So...I made an extra-long pin with a hex end. That way, once the bell is installed, I can turn them from the front to adjust the offset.

The final results. I'm happy with this setup in particular as I was able to repeat these numbers a couple times after removing the bell and replacing it.

In full disclosure, I did not end up using the dowels I made. I made them with a .010" offset which turned out to be a little short. Rather than make more, I had a set of .014" Summit Racing dowels which did the trick.

For anyone doing this in the future, here's my ranking of the dowel pins sold today:

RobbMc - Best - A true Mopar .496" dowel with turning and tightening features and priced the same as all the rest.

Summit Racing - Good - The .500 diameter requires turning down, but they have a hex end for turning.

Lakewood - Poop - .500 diameter and a flat blade screwdriver slot for turning. Plus they look like they were made in China by prisoners and children.

Who is RobbMc if I could ask?
