Post subject:  Choke Questions for my a100

Hey guys, I have a 67 a100 I picked up a couple of months ago. Starts pretty easy, but I have to lift/open the engine cover and hold the butterfly closed while I start it. After it warms up for 30 sec or so it's fine for the rest of the day. Here are a few pics of what is on it:

Having a hard time trying to understand what I am missing to get the choke to work. Right now there is nothing even connected to the butterfly flap, so I'm guessing there is some hardware/linkage that I don't have. I saw a couple of threads on a manual choke; which I am fine with but I didn't find any good instructions on where to route a cable. I also saw that there is an electronic kit, but the link to that was broken.

Any help on what I should be reading or what I can do to move forward with this. Thanks in advance!

Yup, you need a № 1232 Electric choke kit . And start shopping for a real air cleaner while you're at it.

Hey guys, I filled out the online form and Carlos asked me to give him a call. I sent him the pics that I posted earlier in this thread and he said he was concerned that I would not be able to mount the electric choke on the manifold. Said he could not tell from the pics if I could mount it. Can you tell from the pics? I'm not sure what I should be looking for.

Also he mentioned I would need either the 1231 or 1232. Dan, I know you said 1232. Just wanted to be sure thats the right one, and that I could mount it. If ya'll need more pics, I am happy to get more.

Thanks!

You need a 1232 (the 1231 is only for 1-barrel carburetors) and yes, it will mount just fine. The only question is whether it will hook up easily to the choke lever on your carburetor. It depends on whether you have a 6-cylinder 2bbl carburetor or a V8 2bbl carburetor. If you have a V8 carb, you'll need to adapt the choke lever.

Thanks Dan. Going to go ahead and order the 1232. I'll probably have more questions when it comes. More to come...

OK, got the choke. Spent some time gazing into the dog house at the carb and I'm calling uncle. Where does it mount? I tried positioning it every which way on either side of the carb and I'm seeing a place to mount it. Little help?!?

Here are some pictures of the choke conversion kit installed on the 225 in my brother's 1983 Dodge van. He also has a two barrel carb, like yours, so your installation should be identical:

The unit bolts to the choke thermostat pocket in the exhaust manifold. You may need to bend the bracket slightly to get the angle right to hook tot he carb. And I do mean SLIGHTLY. Otherwise it is a very simple upgrade. You will need to fabricate a switched + feed to power the choke thermostat coil when the key is on.

I think thats the cleanest carb I have ever see in my life.

Thank you for the pic! I was thinking it needed to be mounted in line with the carb rather than off to the side like that.

Going out right now to check it out. :D

That was a NOS Holley 2280 I purchased from SlantSixDan. Works a treat.

The choke conversion can be confusing at first, but you can get it.

Thanks supercharged...spotted it up yesterday and looks like a perfect fit. So how about the heat sensor, is there a specific location for it?

I use the rear bolt hole in the top of the head between the valve cover and the manifolds (there are only two bolt holes like this). It is conveniently close to the choke thermostat mounting point and provides a good point for measuring the temperature of the head.
