What is the flow direction of water in my heater - 61 Valiant? Two heater hoses from water pump but need to know which hose has the heater valve. Thanks |

Actually, the water outlet that points 'up' is for the bypass hose to the head. The small fitting above the radiator hose fitting is for the heater and is likely the return as the lower radiator hose is for return flow from the radiator. There should be a hose nipple on the front of the head, near the thermostat housing. This would be heated water from the engine, to the heater (input flow). From a practical standpoint, it really shouldn't matter which hose gets the heater valve as it would control flow to the heater either way. jus sayin.... |

…but because of the design of the heater valve in the '60-'62 cars, it does matter. The flow is into the core through the valve, out of the core to the small fitting on the water pump neck. |

I want to use a "generic" heater tap in the heater hose. The original heater tap in the heater hot box is a pest to adjust, etc. Does it matter which hose I fit the generic heater tap too? I think if I fit it to the wrong hose I will always have warm air coming inside as the flow of hot water is stopped after it passes through the heater core. |

But how would the hot water get in there if the core is already full of cold water?

My mechanic says the water pump sucks. So the outlet from the engine pushes water to the heater hose/core and this is the hose in which the heater tap is placed. |
