Post subject:  Hughes Engines - Cam at ICH Swap Meet

I stopped by the Hughes Engine Booth at the ICH Swap Meet.
They had a slant six cam on display with their other engine offerings.

When I inquired to speak with someone at Hughes that had knowledge of the Hughes Slant Six cam I was introduced to Dave Hughes.

I asked about the tight lash specifications on that cam and Dave's reply was that the lash is tighter because they were wanting to eliminate the typical slant six clatter.
He also talked about the reverse dual profile and putting more duration on the intake, much of the same stuff that Doug D used to talk about
He also commented that like other mechanical cams, one could loosen the lash 2 to 4 thousands and potentially pick up performance. He also commented they have sold several
of the slant six cams and have not any complaints or issues.

He also commented , and this is the important one that they use all Mopar developed cam lobes and he then went into the Mopar 903 lifter being able to support a faster ramp
than cam lobes designed around Chevy lifters.
He also commented that he has many more lobes than what is currently offered on the slant six cams, so if someone is looking for a slant cam other than what shows on the site they can contact him he would do his best to go through what he has to come up with a Mopar lobe that matches what is being requested.

Throughout the conversation Dave H seems genuinely interested in the slant and was happy to stand there and talk to me about it.

I've been to their shop a couple of times, several years ago (like 12-15 years ago) ..... I don't remember then, seeing or hearing anything related to the /6 while I was there/, so I'm thinking this is relatively new stuff for them. but being that I have recently been hearing more and more about them getting into /6 stuff, I wonder just how deep they plan to get into new tech for them? (finally a new head that we have been teased about, over the years of playing with the Slanted engines? maybe?)
I, too, went by their booth, but they were several people deep, while I was there/ and wanted to see as much of what "everybody" had as I could,
I wanted to see what new stuff they had to offer, but never was able to get close enough to really see what that might be....

I has been a year or so since I talked with Dave at Hughes and most of my discussions were around helping Dan Foley (Mopar Muscle) with his 66 Dart project.
It is nice to see that Hughes is supporting more SL6 stuff and It looks like they followed some of my advice on Slant Six cams. (Slants respond well to reverse dual patter cam grinds)
I am not sure why Hughes is using lobe profiles with such tight lash ramps because that can be problematic for a solid lifter Slant Six, especially with the exhaust valve. ( lot's of expansion there)
Time will tell if these new grinds work well.

They have been building s/6 cams for at least 15 years, but it was a special order item.
