I know for fact the head on my car has hardened seats installed (have receipts from previous owner). Can stock sized seats be reground for oversized valves or are they only good for the size valve they are installed with? I understand there might be multiple sizes that could have been installed so I can imagine I might not know without removing the head to inspect. Was going to look for a newer style head if I get to porting one and putting in larger valves but if I can reuse the seats it might be worth the trouble of just staying with the stock 64 head. Seats are sized for the valve. You can't change the valve size any that you could measure. I would hunt for another head if you wanted a big valve. |

A good shop could possibly remove the old seats, machine out the seat and install new (larger) hardened seats for your bigger valves. If you can find a reliable shop, you can ask them. Maybe others on this site would know. I have stopped putting hardened seats in as I always use stainless valves now and I believe that solves the valve recession issue. The only 2 heads where I had substantial recession issues were with stock valves on a well worn stock head (seats). I do not have tons of miles on recent heads I have done with stainless valves and no hardened seats, but at least a few 10s of thousands of miles and no significant recession. Lou |
