Worked as a mechanic, changed all types of distributors but this S/6 has me concerned. Looking to HEI
the ignition and went to remove the distributor {1983 D150 88000K} and it feels like it's hitting a pin.
The hold is down completely removed. I have the new one on the bench and the tolerances albeit tight
shouldn't be an issue. Could some form of pitting on the aluminum shaft be preventing an otherwise easy removal? Has anyone else encountered
this issue.

Thanks

Probably an accumulation of hardened goo-goo on the distributor housing where it extends into the block. Spray some less-hard goo-goo in there so as to cause a penetrating effect.

They can get stuck as mentioned above. And I didn't do it, but got an engine one time and the dist housing was broken off in the block!

What is the procedure for timing a lean burn, no vacuum advance and what is the setting. So far when I set it at 12 degrees it has some pinging.

single pickup or dual pickup within the distributor?
If you are doing the HEI, you will be deleting the lean burn anyways, in which case you'll be yanking that distributor and putting one from a slightly older model in, that has both centrifugal and vacuum advance of which the lean burn one does neither.
at that point it will be a "play with it til you get it to run the best" situation, where ever it winds up with the timing light.
also remember these engines had lots of issues with the outer ring on the damper slipping, making the timing marks non accurate.

to truly answer your question, to time a lean Burn setup, you yank it off, and do the conversion. Timing the flight in the air til it hits the garbage can, is optional.
Many do the HEI, of which I have yet to do, I just did my 85 and retrofitted it to a Mopar 4 pin ECU.

I don't get it this distributor doesn't have the vacuum advance.

Thank you for that information! Through my research and conversion efforts with the HEI I found that some Holley 1945 didn't have the, no vacuum at idle, takeoff needed for the vacuum advance. My D150 with the dual lean burn is one of them. Do you know what the work around is for this?

the workaround for that is a different carb from an earlier model. good time to do a super 6 swap it you ever considered it...
on the distributor, you'd be better with a factory one from an older model than the one you pictured, too.

I'll sound like a dope here, but what is entailed with a super six swap?

Also, I've seen the valve seal replacement without the head removal. My PU is using oil and I like this easy fix to try if it will help. When working as a mechanic, which seems like another life now, we would cut the top of the valve guide and the new valve seals would tightly fit on it. On my 1983 D150 Slant six are they floating type? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ORv76qBpxg

Thank for your comments, they help.
