Post subject: | Slant six Np435 Bell Housing Bracket |
Hello All. Previously posted at FABO. Was suggested to post here as well. I have a '72 D100 with a slant and NP435 granny trans. I've been searching for pics of the triangular bracket that supports the lower third of the bell housing around the low starter position. My truck's is missing and would explain the crack in the top of the bell housing. If I could find a pic I could easily fab or at least know one when I see it. Rather simply purchase one. This would have to be the same for every slant powered NP435 truck since 1972. Thanks -Andrew |

Do you have a picture of your bellhousing? I only know of the early bellhousings with the tombstone front, that will also bolt to a V-8 and are almost circular in shape...these have a an ear above the starter and 2 bolt holes to match along the arc of the bell. The late version with the open face does not come with a brace. I would suspect that this would cause a problem with the assembly flexing, which would matter in say a unibody car...but it probably wasn't a major factor in a full frame Truck where there is some substantial anchor points for the power train, unless someone ran the bell and tranny over some rough terrain... If you have the early type, I have a spare I'd let go of. |

Hello Duster. Here's a link to the pic https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/th ... et.458841/ There's gotta be something missing. Every other slant to transmission combo has a bracket. The starter and a full third of the bell housing are hanging in air. Thanks for the reply. Hopefully this Mystery Science Theater Bell Housing Edition will get solved. I would be open to trying the previous style bell. Isn't the clutch arm window on the passenger side? |

Nope, those don't come with a bracket, never was, never did. Just the encompassing lower dust shield and the plate that covers the pocket where the high mount starter would be mounted on the A-833/three speed bell. (If it had the provision, there would be more bell below the starter, or the bell would be wider like the 60's version with the bracket. If desired, you will need to put the plates and covers in position and breakout the fabrication skills. As previously stated Trucks are full framed compared to cars, so the engineers probably thought that the assembly wouldn't flex much at the mating point between the bell and block...(I have put one of these into an A-body and it probably would have gone better if these was a bracket of some sort... but they didn't leave any place to mount one unless you fab something that would go to the lower dust sheild bolts, or the Z-bar mount on the drivers side of the bell.) Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. On the previous style the clutch arm and hydraulic slave cylinder is on the passenger side... you are correct. If you have the 143 tooth flywheel... you can do a junkyard swap by removing the 10 tooth gear on a 90's denso mini starter for the LA engine with the 11 tooth gear from a 90's dodge minivan denso starter and get a lighter, better starter for your setup...FYI. |

Thanks for the reply Duster. Can't figure that Chrysler engineers thought i'd be ok to have the entire drive train supported by the 2 engine pads up front and the single mount wayyy back behind the 150 pound transmission. I have located a pic of the earlier style you mentioned. And it has a bracket. https://i.postimg.cc/tCZF14tL/Manifoldi ... ion019.jpg Hopefully somebody throws out an old bed frame so I can whistle up a new bracket. Take Care and stuff -andrew |

You'll be disappointed... those engines had sandwich mounts for the engine, and then the bellhousings had ears on the bell itselfwith sandwich mounts a couple inches from the front of the bell, and no supporting cross member mounts like the 70's+ trucks... literally the tranny hung from the 4 bolts in the bell...I had to laught when I saw the underside of a late 50's Dodge Truck and it almost had the same mounting configuration except it had the parking brake friction drum between the tailshaft and the driveline... still no tailshaft support. If you want this style bracket, I have one I will sell to you, send me a PM with zip code... the problem is the old bell is the wider diameter of the poly A and/or B style engine and the bracket fits the radius of the of that block and has the spare room for the bracket... the late style bell you have is a bit smaller and doesn't have that extra space, so you will have to fab a bracket from the Z-bar pad on the drivers side to bolt to the back of the "wing"... and even then... that doesn't quite fit below the mid-axis of the bell to prevent Y-axis flexing of the assembly... the best way to make it work is a bracket that replaces your lower cover and bolts to those bolt holes in the bottom of the bell...which will then function like the wing found on the A-833 bell. |

Thanks for taking the time Duster. The new engines coming together. I'll post here with the solution soon. Stay safe. -andrew |
