The VIN should be stamped on the oil pan rail on the oil pump side back by the bellhousing. It should match your truck VIN. There will be a flat machined surface in the rail. |

I did not find any numbers anywhere besides under the plug right where head and block meet and the casting number on the very top. If it isnt there, chance it's a replacement or what? I'm lost right now bc I can't find anything other than the those 2 numbers which one being cast number. For some reason it wont let me upload any photos |

The machined spot on the oil pan rail on the blocks started mid-year in '68. It's probably covered with goo. What makes you think it might not be original? The pad by the alternator bracket will have a series of numbers on it that will tell the year and cubic inch. |

It's not there that I can find. I literally just decreased the heck out.of the block and sprayed primer on it and still never found it. None of the numbers I found match vin and the number I did find is saying Oct 24th i think and my truck manufacturer date is 12/79 but titled as an 80. I would like it to be original by all means by need to confirm either way so I can decide to whether to continue the build or go a different route..One number I did find was. 0. 225 T. 1024. 2E |

1980 model year manufacturing would have begun late summer early fall of 1979. No stamped numbers on block deck extending out from under head on passenger's side of engine most likely a result of an engine rebuild when block's deck was trued up, and machinist did not re-stamp with current data. Where engine build date is before truck assembly, probably its the original engine. Correct engine for you truck would be an engine's castings and build date occurred before truck was assembled. Same goes for transmission and all other parts. Look here for casting date decoding and other stuff good for bookmarking. |

Well the crazy thing is that I verified transmission number and the transfer case and both come back with 12/79 manufacturer. The transfer case has the date printed on the outside but why would the motor be the only with a different manufacturer date? I understand the time it takes to make so I know they start months ahead of time back then but I'm just stumped as the y it would be different. 1980 seems to be an oddball year with use what we have left and then start new inventory. |

I’ve got a 1980 (build date 04/29) model Slant six that I pulled out of my ‘75 D100 (obviously not original). There is a VIN stamped on the passenger side of the block, right below (not on) the deck surface back near cyl. 6. Maybe check this area for a vertical pad with your VIN. Might be hard see on an installed engine without a mirror. |

Yeah, the VIN may be by the deck. I know I have found it before, but I am old. ![]() 10/24 build date would be normal for a December truck build. Remember, production goes from July to June for a model year and engines can be built months in advance. |
