Gasket questions for a rebuild: 1. Does anyone have a complete list of gaskets required for an engine rebuild? I know of at least one item that was not included in my kit, so now I'm wondering what else I might be lacking. 2. SSD and DD's article from 2002 suggests Hylomar for the manifold gasket and copper high-temp RTV for the inter-manifold (heat riser) gasket. Any updates to that in the last 18 years? ![]() |

What was missing from your gasket set? Sounds like an error. If you want no-leak int/exh then get the Remflex kit, or the green gasket from Brian Droschak and maybe double up the int-exh heat riser gasket and use copper RTV. Probably one with copper RTV is fine if all is flat and aligned. Lou |

As I mentioned in another thread, I bought a separate rear main seal kit because the L-shaped rear main cap side gaskets were not included in the EngineTech engine rebuild kit for 1960-1981 slants. For some reason they have a 1982-1983 kit that includes them, but that kit didn't show up on RockAuto for my 1974 engine. I actually saw that they were not in the picture for the kit I bought, but I assumed they would be included anyway. Yeah, I know, ASSUME makes an ASS out of U and ME, or in this case just me. I called EngineTech and they confirmed those are not included in the kit (they also didn't have any outside of a kit). |

That is very odd. I have not seen an engine kit w/o those. Thanks for the heads up. Lou |

I cannot imagine how doubling the hotbox (intake-to-exhaust manifold) gasket could possibly be a good idea. It'll throw the two manifolds' heat-mating surfaces out of alignment with each other and practically guarantee leaks at the head. And if it's the stamped-metal "gaskets" you use at this location, they almost certainly won't seal for you whether you use one, two, or seventeen. Use the Remflex set, one gasket per location, without sealer. |
