Yes large 3/16 ball goes in bottom of pump well. Did it have one to begin with, 78 carbs no ball.

The ball is supposed to seat tightly against this hole so all the gasoline in the cylinder goes through the accel pump outlet passages, instead of leaking back through the inlet passages. The technique here is to place a blunt-end punch or piece of rod firmly atop the old check ball and, with the casting firmly supported, give the rod a few sharp raps. You will know you've done it right when the ball "sticks" lightly into place on its seat; don't panic, just use a small screwdriver to pry the ball off the seat, then discard the old ball and install the new one. This re-forms the seat so the new ball can seal well on it.

You know, in over 20 years of messing with slant sixes and carbs, this is the first time I heard about staking the check ball in. Chalk that up to ignorance on my part. This explains many problems I have had over the years!

After all these years I didn't know 1 ball was smaller than the other. I meant that's what she said. I did not put a kit in this carb. I cleaned and re-installed with the old gaskets and everything. Misplaced my debit card and need to move this car. I'll give ya'll the update on my abilities.

Guess work fuel level above paper gasket would not make sense. Fuel level much below discharge ball seat would result in less pump shot. No spec for fuel level.
