Dear Slant 6 Sages, I was able to buy an inexpensive but new 63 Dart/Valiant gas tank recently (AMD closeout) and am thinking about modifying it for an EFI in tank pump for the the 62 Valiant, while still keeping the car running w/original tank. I believe this 63 unit will bolt up, but am not sure. I could not find what I needed with the search function here. Will the filler pipe drop in and the contours and mount strap work? Thanks very much for your help, Lou |

Lou, what I hear is that the 63 tank will fit in, a little different but can be made to fit. If you can save your J Hook, that would be good to make the fit better on the strap. I think I saw on FABO you might have to move the frame strap location a couple of inches, and the hook hole? The sending unit is different, so you need the 63 part number. That's about the extent of my knowledge. |

Great info and link. Thanks, Stan! I am going to install an in-tank EFI pump. Looks pretty straightforward to get the 63 tank in there. I may even relocate the filler neck somehow because of the bad fuel spill issue on these cars. Otherwise, maybe install a 1-way valve in the filler neck. Anyone know of a good aftermarket or factory retrofit check valve for our filler necks?? Lou |

I installed a new 63 tank in my 62. It worked until it fell out, dragging behind me spilling fuel. No fire, but had to be towed home. I got lucky. The strap indentations are mis-located for a 62 from my experience, be careful. I converted to a FuelSafe fuel cell. |

Thanks for the nudge and reminder. I want to re-install a factory gas tank in my 61 Valiant. It has an aluminum fuel cell mounted sideways currently. |

I’ll have to look. I never paid attention since it had the fuel cell when I bought it from Norm. |

On my 64, I cut a 1/8” curf notch in the bottom of the filler tube and about 4” from the fill end of the tube and about 1/2 way through the diameter. I then cut a 1/8 piece of aluminum which I cut into a 1/4 moon shape and JB welded in to the curf. What this does is holds the modern gas filler in place better during fueling and puts a curb in the bottom of the filler to prevent backwash. Additionally I covered the welded area with a hose and clamp in case the weld fails. It works. |

Unfortunately, I no longer have the tube. It did hold the gas filler nozzle during fill-ups so I could fill hands free. It also stopped the splash back during fill ups and hard right turns. I did get some though my cap was not a great fit. |

When I get a chance, I will write up a How-To article. It is a simple alteration to do. |

Thank you, Lou Yes I second. I had a more drastic alteration in mind, on deck for my 64 dart this winter, but if this works I cna give it a shot. Greg |
