A bit off topic, but a head scratchier. One of my Mopars is loosing coolant with no signs of where it is going. No white sweet smelling steam from tail pipe, no leaking from heater core, no dripping from plumbing under hood including radiator, and no excessive filling of overflow tank. Engine runs well, until returning from the last trip into to town a few days ago. I'm suspecting ether a cracked head, or blown head gasket. It looses a half pint of coolant every 40 miles or so. Plugs all look about the same color Pulling the head is a major PITA. And to add to the fun, on the last outing the engine won't drop to an idle without stalling, suspect is a plugged idle circuit. Carb has never been rebuilt in 38 years, so probably to be expected. I did locate a carburetor rebuild kit, but not looking forward to messing with the most hated carb ever install in a Chrysler product. Yes, it's the 2.6 L Mitsubishi 4 cylinder 3 valve Jet head with the dreaded Mikuni 2 barrel with ten thousand vacuum lines a few electrical devices and EGR valve attached. Fuel pump is delivering plenty of fuel. I still haven't pulled the slant out of Dart for its second regasketing in 200 miles to stop an oil leak at the pan and timing cover on low side. Another project I have been procrastinating for a month. Bill |

Loosing coolant? Was it not tight to begin with? ![]() |

What does the oil look/smell like and do you get any bit of steam out of the breather? Lou |

Does your 'Mopar' lose coolant under it's empty, or does it lose some then stop losing it? I once had a car that would lose 1 quart then be happy, forever. I kept topping it off, it kept losing it. After some time, I learned to accept it as an individual and not expect it to conform to the perhaps rigid ideas set forth by the society - the Society of Automotive Engineers, to be exact. The car served me well for several years thereafter, though I want to be clear I am in no way stating that I was its master, nor did I own it. |

My hopped up Project V (66 Valiant racecar) engine with about 250 HP has been doing this for years. I ran some "Zotite" into it last year and that slowed down the loss. I have had no running issues and even ran a road course weekend last fall with apparently no ill effects. Plenty of drag racing. There was a little water/coolant in the oil, so I changed that more frequently. A pint every 40 miles was somewhere around my loss level before the Zotite, and it dropped to a very slow loss after. You might try that before you get into it. Lou |
