| Post subject: | Engine removal questions |
Hey everyone...happy Saturday. I've got an engine removal in process. This my first time doing this and I'm in the early stages of just removing and draining right now and I've got some questions. The factory service manual says to remove the tranny first. Is this necessary? The Hanes manual doesnt have tranny removal first. Also, where is the best spot to hook up the chains to hoist it out? Into those two threaded holes in the head?? Hope you guys can help. Enjoy....G. |

Aye, the two threaded holes are where it's at. I'm hoping to leave the tranny actually on the car, with something propped up underneath it to hold it steady while the engine's off. I'm still trying to find bolts that'll fit those holes though. Seems to be an odd size/thread. |

You can leave the trans. in the car, try to support it with a rolling floorjack or some blocks. Here is a message I searched-out, key words "engine and hoist" http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic ... 8116#18116 When just pulling / installing the engine alone, I use the front bolt hole only, that gives a little reward tilt to the engine and helps get you onto the the trans. To pull the engine and trans together, loop a strap between both holes. http://www.dutra.org/pictures/engine/engine-in.jpg The head bosses are tapped 3/8-16 UNC, most 9/16 hex head bolts are this thread size. Use a good quality bolt and chain and never work or reach under an engine hanging in the air. DD |

When I took my engine out I removed the engine and tranny together. It is easier to do it this way if you want to work on the transmission anyhow. It will be much easier to jack up the front of the car first to allow more clearance to lift them out together. |
