In 2008 my Dart did not have any kick-down linkage, so advice given here to this then newbie pointed me to the Mancini Racing cable conversion kit. It's a great kit made mostly from Mopar factory parts, bolts right up, couldn't be happier with how it has worked for 12 years.

Fast forward a decade:

While pulling out the engine for the third time in the last 18 months for a rebuild, and then two oil pan leaking gasket fixes, that wonderful cable got tangled up with the floor shift pivot rod and broke its plastic attachment bracket at transmission, and caused some irreparable kinks during the big pull. Trust me this old cheep bastard tried to get it working smoothly... I didn't need any of the brackets, bell crank, and return springs in a replacement kit, that now is $200+. It took a while to locate the cable that was originally used in said kit.

Mopar part # 5207 9204 is the one. It sells for between 50 to 110 bucks from all kinds of sellers. I got one coming for 57 bucks with tax on or before the 9th including free shipping. I could have had it on the 7th for an extra $30, did I mention my cheep bastard tendencies? Most of the places shopped were promising delivery on around the 18th.

A few days ago I replaced the kick-down cable after stuffing engine back into the car. Cable install was a bit of a thrash as outlined in part of Engine post here. Now that new cable is in and adjusted correctly, transmission shifts up and down just right.

I guess the leak coming from lower two bolts in front of oil pan is now sealed... Won't know for a while, as the last time I did this project the leak came back What's different this time I discovered the two lower bolt hols in oil pan were wall'ered out allowing the metal spacers encased within rubber gasket punched through oil pan to base of block.

I welded those four front pan bolt holes up, and re-driled them the correct size so metal inserts had something to bare on. Also I followed Dough's oil pan install instructions in his new publication, so hopefully this will be the last time I deal with this irksome task.

Around here anything 15 years old and older is such a rusted pile of crap not much is salvageable. Only one pick and pull yard within 15 miles in my area, the other yards strip and stock used parts, and their prices are too high for a lot of their stuff, so might as well buy new. I learned from experience if that cable does not move freely back and forth, the transmission won't shift correctly consistently, and at times carburetor won't return to idle stop fully which at times keeps the mechanical advance from coming to rest.
