Through a little Craigslist sleuthing (there was a /6 transmission for sale and I asked about other parts) I found 2 slants that had been involved in a shop fire. One engine is an incomplete early 225. Just a block with main caps, crank and bare head. Pictured is the other "complete" engine. I expect that all I will be able to reuse are the block, crank, rods and peanut-plug head. Maybe some of the valve gear, oil pump and cam. The engine was supposed to have been completely rebuilt. In fact I was negotiating to buy this engine in February 2016, but the seller was stuck at a price point that I wouldn't accept. Time passed and the owner's shop burned to the ground. The son who posted the Craigslist ad had some /6 ignition system parts he wanted to sell. I agreed to buy the ignition parts in order to secure access to the burned stuff that was otherwise free for the hauling. Not pictured is a heat damaged Clifford intake that I think I can fix and Clifford long tube headers.

I also have the collapsed engine stand that the complete 225 was on. It is bent right near the top so I can fix it with just a bit of rectangular tube.

The heat from the fire may have stress relieved that block and head, maybe a good one, unless it got hit by the fire department water hoses, then it maybe cracked,,
I would have the block and head checked for cracks. The crank should be ok, steel is much more robust for quench cracking than gray iron is.

Sounds like a fun project! Reminds me of a video i saw on YouTube of a guy who found an old Briggs and Stratton buried in a swamp and got it running again. It looked horrible, but it ran.

I began tear-down this afternoon. Aside from the melted aluminum this seems like marine salvage. Rust is everywhere. The '75-'76 peanut plug head is off and I got 11 of 12 valve springs and retainers off. There is one exhaust valve stuck full open and the spring coil-binds before I can get the keepers out. I also cannot get the oil pump out as it's rusty and won't turn and neither will the camshaft. The valve stems and lifters are soaking in PB Blaster. The pistons are +.040". The pistons didn't melt, but the heat treat has to be gone.

I forgot to mention that the alternator and ignition coil melted out of their mounts. Their remains were found under the engine.

I beat the valves out of the head and found that it has hard exhaust seats. This could be a good core for someone doing a lot of miles on a build with stock size exhaust valves. It will need guides and probably surfacing, but looks good otherwise. Free to a good home. :)

Would be cool if that engine could be reused in say a 1961
