1966 Valiant S/6 AT, stock.
had my radiator rodded and cleaned up. then yesterday drove it some 18miles one way. temp gauge read in the "middle". stopped and confabbed with a friend for about 30 mins or so. then, on my way home the temp gauge was way to the "right", not quite out of the "range", but close. drove at 50mph then 60mph, no change. when i got home the temp gauge was still far to the right. used my infra-red thermometer to check the engine.... right where the temp sending unit was it registered 190F, while the radiator was some 185, and the lower hose was 135. replaced my temp sending unit today..... but same freaking results. my car does have a thermostat in it as i checked on that. any suggestions PLEASE??? been thinking of installing a "numbers temp gauge" next. need HELP (car not me.....) stay safe

make certain the sending unit wire isn't grounding anywhere. May also be the dash gauge volt regulator.

Yep, Matt has good points, your temp readings sound fine.

BINGO or SUCCESS. while in the process of replacing the sending unit AND wire, i discovered the PO had wired it up so that the wire was between the Heater Hose AND Engine, and was rubbed bare and almost broken. so it would ground out sometimes and not. replaced wire, re-routed it too. so, THANKS for help. stay safe
