Post subject: | Timing mark on harmonic balancer |
I have a 64 Valiant 225. It has the harmonic balancer with a timing mark for the drivers side timing tab, but someone along the way removed that timing tab and installed a later timing cover with the spot welded timing tab (Passenger side). I was going to use a positive stop to find tdc and make a mark for the passenger side timing tab, but before I do, 1. Does anybody have a balancer for the passenger side timing tab? If so, could you make a diagram that shows where the timing mark is in correlation to the key way (I think it a little before it)? 2. Does anybody know where I can get the timing tab for the drivers side? I believe it just bolts on and is located with the timing cover alignment dowel pin. I’ve looked everywhere for a drivers side timing tab and can’t find one new or used. |

Today, I made a positive stop tool for # 1 spark plug hole and made a TDC mark to correspond with the passenger side timing tab. I won’t be needing that drivers side timing tab. Funny, when I installed the new timing chain, I used a straight edge to get those 2 dots on the sprockets dead nuts centered through the crank and can centers and made a mark on the balancer that should be close to TDC for that timing tab. After using the positive stop, it turned out that mark I made was dead nuts TDC. Filed a grove there and good to go. It was a tooth off with the old loose timing chain (maybe jumped a tooth at some point, but still ran. Now that the cam is timed correct, I’m sure the ignition timing will be way off (advanced) and the distributor is at the limit of adjustment, so tomorrow after I start it, I’ll probably need to pull the distributor and move it a tooth. |
