Post subject:  Hole in throttle body frame on bbs carb

Hello,

I am digging into a bbs rebuild.

Tag on carb says 3676s but i have no idea if that's the correct tag / carb for the engine combination.

Question I have is about a hole in the throttle body housing.. not the throttle plate.

It is open to the outside of the carb... is that correct, or should there be some sort of welch plug there?

Second picture shows location and condition of the hole.

I've seen that sort of thing before. A tube for a vacuum hose has come out of the hole. You can either find another tube or just press a ball bearing in to block the hole.

No.

A tube has not come out of that hole. It's always only ever been just a hole, it was put there deliberately by Carter (Holley and Bendix and other carb makers put similar holes in similar places). And no, it's not supposed to be connected to anything. And no, it's also not supposed to be blocked off with a ball bearing. When guess-based advice is given and followed, it results in problems.

Updated info on what the hole is for, sorta: some of you will remember I liquidated my giant collection of literature when I was moving last Autumn-Winter out of the house (RIP) my grandparents built. There was a fair amount of carburetor lit in the collection, and one page in a Carter service manual or bulletin went into detail on that hole. The explanation was along the lines that it was to alleviate a tendency of fuel vapour to build up in the carburetor after engine shutdown and make hot starts difficult, which makes perfect sense given its location. I was under severe time pressure (and several other kinds) and I think I took a picture of that page before sending off the lit to its new home, but I have no idea where the pic is, and there are thousands still on my phone. Perhaps Matv91 will pull another rabbit out of his hat about it.

Doug Dutra has done pretty extensive experimenting with what happens when that hole is plugged, and he found differences in idle transition and spark advance behaviour, so this vapour explanation doesn't cancel the other one, but it does add a piece to the puzzle (or pie?): plugging that hole is likely to aggravate hot-start issues.

Carter 3676s: BBS for 1964 170/automatic.

Lookit there. Hat minus rabbit = exactly what I had in mind.

Er-ruhh…Matv91, I don't recall, did your instance of that page come from my collection?
