Post subject:  Late engine to early transmission question

I have a 64 Valiant 2 door seeedan 170/three on the tree. All original drive train. I am building a long rod 225 engine for it. It's not right in front of me but the engine is a 70s model steel crank engine. Is there anything I need to do to mate this engine with the early three speed transmission similar to what's done with the early and late automatics, or is it pretty much a bolt in deal? Thanks for any help.

Rob

Later crank needs the later flywheel. The hole and the centering ring both grew larger for model-year 1968.

Joshua, thanks so much. Is that the only thing that changed I will need?

That's it so long as the crank has a pilot bearing.

Will need a 1 inch spacer for the exhaust pipe to the manifold or the pipe will hit the linkage or the floor because the 225 engine is 1 inch taller. Also reuse the 170's oil pan and pickup tube and engine brackets.

Yes, I have the 2.5" head pipe from TTI. I plan to run the rest of the exhaust out at 2.5" off the head pipe. I also have an extra earl oil pan. As for the crank, I actually have not even looked at it. It is a steel crank, so it's drilled for a bushing, I just have not looked to verify it has one. Thank yall so much for the help.

There are slant six cranks out there that have the rear of the crank drilled but not honed to size for a pilot bushing. If there is not a pilot bushing in the crankshaft pilot shaft hole be very suspicious. You will be able to wack a pilot bushing in, but that will compress the bushing ID and it will lock on to the transmission pilot shaft when the engine is running making it impossible to shift gears. Ask me how I know that.
