I have a slant 6 with raised numbers by the freeze plugs 2202843. Could someone tell me the year and application of the engine. It is currently in my 1954 chevy truck that I just acquired from my cousins' farm.

Just behind the alternator (as in between the alternator and the block, not towards the rear of the engine) is a pad with #'s stamped on it. Gather those numbers and report back....

2202843 is (shakily) identified as a probable '61 or '62 170 cubic inch engine block. The stamped engine ID number Jase describes, if it is present, will help firm things up.

S: Engine built for 1962-model vehicle
17: 170 cubic inch displacement
7 02: Engine built on July 2, 1962
2: Build line or shift

So yup, it's a '62 170.
