| Post subject: | Decent mechanical fuel pump? |
I'm upgrading my fuel lines, doing a modified SlantsixDan fuel line modification, and have a new fuel pump that looks really cheapo. Is there a brand/make/model of mechanical fuel pump that is of decent quality available? |

THIS ONE is NOS and rebuildable. Rebuild kits available HERE. But I would double check that the rebuild kit for that specific pump is available from that rebuild kit vendor. |

New old stock fuel pump's diaphragm may not be compatible with modern fuels containing alcohol. |

I wonder too about dry rot from a life on the shelf. Earlier this year I needed one for my son's truck, found a guy on ebay with 2 federal mogul carter ones --older enough to not have come from china but not too old to be really worried about dry rot or ethanol compatibility. I got em both, one will go onto my new motor once built I do Wonder though if the one Dan showed us would be a better one for guys running a turbo, looks like extra threaded fittings maybe to plumb in the boost reference for increased pressure needed for a boosted motor? Just a thought. |

My preference is either the '60-'63 Carter M2996s rebuildable fuel pump (rebuild kits come from Then & Now Automotive; you have to be very vocal about specifying a spring pressure no higher than 5 psi or you might get a too-strong spring) or an AC 6972. The AC pumps never gave me a moment's trouble, even pulled out of an old box, even on a steady diet of gasohol. I tend to avoid the non-Carter bolt-together pumps for a couple of reasons: some of them have a lever arm design that looks a whole lot more aggressive in terms of possibly wearing down the camshaft (not tested, just guessed), and rebuild kits can be harder to get for them because they're not an OE design. While putting together the link for this post, I happened upon this not-seen-before animal: a bolt-together pump more like the factory's '64-up design. Cool! Take a close look at the pump arm. See how it's made of a stack of steel sheets? The pumps I avoid run the edge of that stack of sheet steel directly on the camshaft, which seems a bad idea to me. This pump has another piece of steel wrapped around the stack, so a smooth surface rides on the camshaft—fine by me. Looks like this pump dates from when Airtex were engineering and making their own (good) stuff rather than just slapping their name on pump-shaped trinkets from China. I'd probably use it. No idea if Then & Now could supply a kit for it, but if someone were to send them pics they'd probably be able to answer. |
