Ok I am in a delimma, reading all articles I can I'm still confused as to how big a cam I can run and not mess with stall speed. Also if I use stock piston rod combo, not decking the block and shave say .100 off head why do some people say 9.0:1 compression and some say quite a bit higher closer to 10:1. I've read that stock compression is 8.2 and also 8.7, anyone know which it is? How big is too big for carb, some say 4bbl too much, some say its perfect, by all calculations around 450cfm should be good. Anyone with some hard facts out there, please help.

Hey,

my cylender head is in the shop getting Ford 300valves (1.78INTAKE and 1.56EXHAUST) put in as well as decked .100 and some extensive bowl re-working with some serious porting.

with .1 off the head you'll get around 9.2 - 9.5:1 compression depending on the type of gasket you use. if your getting the head milled you should port the head and maybe up the valve sizes abit :)

the stock slant came with 8.2 - 8.5:1 compression depending on the years. as for the camshaft, as Dennis (slantzilla) once said, stock converter = stock cam. i think you MAY get away with something like the Comp cams 252S with a stock converter wich is a VERY mild camshaft.

I'd go for a 2200 stall and a mopar performance "17Second" camshaft if budget allows. On the 4bbl note, with your setup i'd go for a set of headers and an offy/clifford manifold with a Holley 390 cfm carb, i'm running a 600cfm Holley on a STOCK slantsix right now and it runs perfectly fine, however with a stock motor your really not gonna see much from just upgrading to a 4bbl (unless you only have a 1bbl)

anyways, all this talk and really there is one q for you to awnser, what do YOU want to do with the vehicle? street? street/strip? etc...

I ran a stock converter with a Comp Cams 264S (believe that was the part #). No problems whatsoever, but of course I didn't get much launch. Moved up to a TCI "Breakaway", but still wish I had more stall speed for racing purposes. I'll swap to a looser converter eventually.

Forget the Holley, run a Carter. This is just simply my opinion, and I'm givin' it. 87Slant_sickness, you certainly went from "can't get this thing to run right" to "runs perfectly fine" in about 1 second. Far out. Good luck keeping that crappy Holley running right. I wonder what yer plugs are gonna look like after a few hundred miles. I'm not talkin' overall a/f ratio either, what kind of fuel lumps are the various cylinders getting??

As far as compression, that would depend on what gas you're planning on using, and what timing you want to get away with, I'd say.

Well as far as what I want (or actually my buddy wants which is who I'm building this for) is around 250 lb/ft of torque at relatively low rpm not really a 7000rpm screamer, and decent hp around 200-210. I was looking into a small turbo setup but looks like more trouble than it will be worth, and it scares my friend. That is why I wanted to know about the compression. My buddy doesnt know much about cars at all, and like I've said before this slant is a learning experience I'm enjoying, so he wants to mess with it as little as possible. Has anyone put hydraulic lifters in place of solids? I know solid builds better power but I dont wanna have to adjust his lash every couple thousand miles.

DW,

Finally fixed all of my Vac leaks, not only that but the high idle screw was on the cam not allowing it to idle down, i've got 55 jets in there and its running great, i havent pulled the plugs yet, i'll do that tommorow saying its my day off ;)

as far as camshaft, i'd go with a 264S, it all depends on what you want for launch, no i wouldnt go to a hydraulic setup, there are no nice "off the shelf" cams for them that i know of and you'd have to get one custom made, the compression reading is prettymuch just a guess, i know a couple people have worked it out, Elam had 9.5:1 and i think D.Idiot had 9.22:1

The lash should be adjusted about 4 times a year or so, and its about at 30min job, the harder you drive it, the more often you have to adjust the lash.

yeah i know adjusting lash isnt too big a deal, but my buddy doesnt know the first thing about it and i would prob end up doin it every time lol. I was just curious if it was possible, as far as custom grind, we have a place here that will regrind cams for 35 bucks, I mainly wanted to see everyones opinion on how big is too big for stock stall.
