Hello all, I have a 1970 D-100 with a 225 and an A250 transmission. I had a lot of vibration and noted some leaking from the tailshaft, so I pulled it to replace the bushing and seal. When I pulled the tailshaft, I found broken pieces of the snap ring that goes around the shaft at the main shaft bearing. Everything inside the transmission looks ok, and it was shifting ok, so my intent is to just replace the snap ring, bushing, and seal, and put it back together. However, the shaft has slid in the bearing, so, the exposed groove is not wide enough to put a new snap ring in. Part of the groove is underneath the center part of the bearing. Has anyone else experienced this before? Is there a trick that will allow me to get a new snap ring on without having to take the whole transmission apart and find somebody with a press? I really know very little about transmissions and most transmission shops around here don't want to mess with manuals, especially old ones. Thanks, Morgan |

Try selecting 2nd gear and watch to see if doing that pushes the main shaft slightly rearward. If so, have someone hold the shifter / shift lever to keep rearward force on the shaft while you carefully tap the inner bearing race forward to uncover the groove. DD |

Just an update, I finally was able to locate a seal and bushing kit, so I took the transmission over to a mechanic I know. He was able to use 2 thin snap rings that equaled the thickness of the broken one (since that's what he had on hand). The first one went in the groove easy, and the second one took a little coaxing with a brass punch and a hammer, but he was able to get in it. Hopefully I will get a chance to drop the transmission back in soon and get her back on the road! |

Last weekend I finally had time to put everything back together and road test! No crazy shaking and no binding up in 2nd gear! We're back on the road again! Thanks everyone for the advice and encouragement! This was the first time I'd pulled a manual transmission out and put it back in and also the first time changing U-joints. I definitely recommend spending the extra cash on a Tiger Tool (made in Canada) U-joint service kit, after nearly destroying my special ordered brand new small transmission / small u-joint slip yoke using a cheap tool that didn't quite fit right. After punting and buying the Tiger Tool kit, it turned a u-joint change into a 5 minute job. Lou, do you make it to any car shows in the area? I think there's a Mopar club here in Roanoke, but I've never been to their show or any meetings. I probably should. Now that Covid's waning, it's possible to socialize again! I used to take my Polara to the cruise-ins in Pulaski when I lived there, but haven't done any shows since I moved to Roanoke 6 years ago. None of my vehicles are "show cars" but I always had people stare at my car and want to know what a "Polara" is... Now everytime I drive the D-100, I can't put gas in it without a couple people coming up to me and asking about it. Gotta love old Mopars! Thanks, Morgan |
