I have a '65 Dodge A100, slant six, and 727 trans. The starter sounds tired, so I think it's time to upgrade to a later model mini starter. And it doesn't fit. I pull them and compare and the open window for gear engagement is 2-2.5 times longer than the mini. Never seen a starter like that! (sorry pic wouldn't load). The 727 is apparently stock to the vehicle having #'s from 1965 and hung from above like the A's are. Does this sound normal or modified?? I put the old starter back in and it is working fine, but can't help wondering what I would do if it fails. I have some pics on the A100 facebook page if you are interested. Thanks Gary & Terri

I don't know for sure, but I think you should have the factory adapter plate between the engine and the trans. That plate is about 1.5 inches thick. I was not aware of any starter fitment problems in this application, but it is something to consider. Does the starter bolt to the transmission, or the adapter plate?

Maybe it's a low mount starter or a direct drive one.

Put some links to the pictures up.. that could help.

I never owned or worked on an a100 so there could be some different parts compared to a car on there.

A 65 A100 with a 727 SHOULDbe using the adapter and a small block 727, which would be a low mount starter.
