I disassembled the rocker arm assembly in my 1965/170. I have the rocker arms soaking in my parts washer. What's the best way to clean those small oil ports/galleys in the part? I've used a small wire with some success on the top port on about three of them. I was able to work the wire all the way through into the middle section that surrounds the bar. The port on the tip is another story. I'm able to run a small wire all the way through except I hit a dead end on all 12 arms at the beginning of the round section. Am I able to go all the way through to the middle section with a wire on the tip port? I know I can on the top port. |

Sad to say that clogged SL6 rocker arms are difficult to get unclogged. Soak, poke and spray the passages but find some clean replacements if the ones you have do not unclog after the first attempt to clear the passages. DD |

Use a spray carb cleaner and spray from the holes in the rocker shaft pivot out. Be sure to wear safety glasses or goggles. If it does not open, soak the rockers for a few days in a good carb cleaner like Berryman and re do the spray process. To clean the rocker shaft, pull the end plugs and work a bottle brush through it. A good machine shop will know where to get replacement plugs and how to install them. |

+1 Remove the end caps, ream the gunk out and re-fit appropriate soft plugs into the ends. Clean the ports with number drills? |

If they were mine and in good shape.....I'd send them to Rocker Arm Specialists. They can refurb them, or even just clean them and send them back. I'm not sure how they clean them...but they get them 100% clean. |

Thanks for the advice. I'll let you know how it goes. I bought the car with a non-running engine on the cheap. I'll invest in new arms if I get it started. |

absolutely, ultrasonic is a great option I just hate to see folks say 'find some clean replacements if the ones you have do not unclog after the first attempt' What? |

Find a local lawn mower shop.We all have Ultrasonic cleaners. |

"New" arms are very hard to find at a reasonable price. Best to find good used, or send a set to RAS for rebuilding.

I am in no way suggesting just giving up on cleaning them myself. I'm about as frugal as one gets. If I can reuse it, I'm going used...not new.What? I like the ultrasonic idea though. Thanks for the feedback! |

I have carb cleaner. I have a SnapOn pressure washer that uses Sta-Brite 33 detergent at 180F. I have a dishwasher. I have a bowl of lacquer thinner. I tried all those and they worked OK, but my rocker arms still had a general dingy-ness to them. Plus in the crevices I could see crud, still. I was going to send them to RAS regardless, but I like to get old parts clean before I send them out for work. Sent them to RAS and they came back looking new. I don't know what they used, but it works! |

I would just use a brm hone in the proper diameter and length for the inside if the shaft. I am sure there is one avail for the supply holes to the arns them selves. http://www.brushresearch.com/flex-hone. ... gIDB_D_BwE Greg |

I have spent countless hours and tried many methods to get those small passages unclogged but with limited success.What? Yes, I always try to get them clear but I am quick to swap-in unclogged units if I can not get the clogged ones to open-up after the first cleaning attempt. I save the clogged-up ones and do try new cleaning methods every so-often but I have yet to find a "sure-fire" way to get a clogged SL6 rocker arm passage cleared, once it is plugged solid. My next attempt is to try "baking" some clogged ones and then soaking and spraying-out the passages. DD |

So, I found a small engine repair with an ultrasonic parts washer and he said he will charge me $20 for the cleaning. I'm gonna give that a try. We'll see how it goes. However, I still haven't gotten an answer about the two passageways. I know the top of the arm passage can be pierced all the way through to the hollow middle of the arm. Does the passageway that is located right next to the valve spring/tip of the arm go all the way through too with a dinky wire? Thanks! |
