Hello all,
So I am rebuilding a slant for a 1974 Dodge D100. I really hadn't planned on doing much to the engine in the first place. Originally my plan was to get it running and restore the truck. Well I had a vaccume leak and had to remove the manifolds, one thing to another and the motors out and in a machine shop. The cyclinders were bored out .06 and .1 off the top, not sure if that was too much taken off but its what was needed to clean the damages. The head was redone but I didn't change the valve sizes. Like I said I wasn't planning on doing much with the motor but here I am. Seems like it might be a waist to keep it stock with a 1 barrel carb. Would a cam even be beneficial installing with stock valve size and a 1 barel carb? Mabe put a cam in since the motor is out and drive it around like that for a while and let the truck develop over time? (Aka wait till I have money for more parts). If I did that is there any suggestions on a camshaft. Someone was telling me to put an RV cam in it, I did some research and didn't find much about that
The truck has a 3 speed and 3.55 rear gears. Its just gonna become a daily with about half maybe a little more of its time on city streets. If I did anything to it I would like to situate it towards a more "Truckie" build. I'm thinking the 2 barel intake and Dutra duels might be perfect from what I've read.

A few here have done what you are looking for. Members Dad Truck and Rick Covalt come to mind. Everyone basically had the same idea it seems but we all varied a bit here and there. Dad truck did the dutra duals thing, I think Rick has headers, and I just hogged out the outlet on a stock manifold to match the pipe size I will be using.

I'm in the middle of exactly such a build myself right now. I sent my cam off to be reground into an "RV" type grind, waiting for it to come back to come back as we speak.
My thoughts are this on how to proceed. I hate re-do's. So even if it takes a bit longer I want to do what I want to do with my engine while I am at it. Especially if it is something that would entail going too deep into the engine a 2nd time.
Something like manifolds, I might use what I have for now, then scout around for what I really want, in my case I have a 2 bbl setup here already for mine, if I decide later to go 4 bbl that wouldn't be too invasive as would say a cam swap.
You say the machine shop took off 0.100" already? Or 0.010? Big difference there. 0.010 is only enough to make up for 1/2 of the difference in head gasket thickness between original and most aftermarket ones. 0.100 might be enough to get you into "need premium gas" territory. Might. Depends on the particular engine, (tolerance stack up), ignition timing and advance curve and more. If it were me and I had to take mine 0.100 I definitely would be taking advantage of the increased compression and upgrading my cam while I was in there.

In your case with the 3 speed and mostly in town driving I think that the 3.55s will do you well. If in town means speeds of around 50 or less most of the time I probably wouldn't worry about it but if you find yourself on the highway much at all I'd be looking for a trans with an OD like maybe an 833od.
In my case I have an auto, and if I stay that way putting an OD behind the slant, takes a bit more doing.my truck may find itself going to a stick when all is said and done to gain the OD. But for now mine will stay a 727 auto.

In my case along with the "do it once" and do it right theme, I am going oversized on the valves, and trying some porting/luckily I have a couple of extra heads here, in case I go too far, all I will be out is some time, basically.

Yeah a 4 speed is probably its future that one is a bit of a waiting game, trying to find a good deal. Maybe it won't be that much but the damage is deep and its right on the edge of the cylinder they will let me know exactly when its finished maybe I'll use a thicker headmaster if its too much. How did opening up the exhaust go for you? I like that idea as well. Any suggestions on a cam besides Rv?

RV cam used to be a whole category of cams. You don't want a hi RPM screamer you want power at low and mid RPMs and that's what an RV type cam will do.they had a group buy of special made head gaskets on here a while back but I dunno if there are any left.

These two would be in the running if I was doing a cam swap in a daily driver/truck build. I believe the stock mechanical cam that was produced in the early to mid 70's does quite well with a compression increase on it's own.

Edit: I do not know where one can find these grinds in the present day, but they are something to consider. Someone who has been around the slant 6 community longer than I have, and knows more about camshafts may be able to fill in more details.
