I am Building an exhaust system for an upcoming Project;

I will be using a shorty Clifford Header,

What is the recommended exhaust tube size from the header collector to the Merge Pipe?

I want to say 2" But I just want to verify before buying all the material.

How long should the 2" Dual pipes before getting into the merge?

What is the size on the outlet of the merge back to the tailpipe? I want to Say 2.5". But again Just want to check to be sure.

Thanks!

Greg

I had one of the Clifford y pipes. IIRC, the pipe was 2" and the outlet was 2-1/2".

How much HP you want to make, and in what RPM range? I assume this for the 64 Dart and the "loaner" shortblock with your good head and the OCG 0.480" cam? Please specify...

Most likely, you will be safe with 2" primaries and 2.5" single from 3-6" behind the trans X-member back. Use a good Y like Flowmaster or I think Magnaflow has em too. I used 2.25" into 3" out the back on my 64 with an engine up toward 250-270 HP. Noise is more with 3" for sure and you don't gain a bunch of HP.

Thanks!
Lou

I believe it depends upon what you want to accomplish. Street or race? Guessing you are looking more at a race vehicle but what follows is something I intend to try when I put a home brew version of Dutra duals on the truck.

It is my understanding that Chrysler put a single exhaust system on 360 equipped cars something like 77, 78 or 79. The front 3/4's was just as you would imagine a dual exhaust system to be (with converters).. the "Y" pipe was just behind the rear axle... I can only reason out that it was "worth" the extra $$ that Mopar had to spend for the performance it contributed.

Below is quote from the allpar website Interview with Pete Hagenbuch, Chrysler engine development engineer:

"I wanted in the worst kind of way to have a twin exhaust system because, man, will that do wonders for a six. You put one, two and three, and four, five and six together and you run 'em down about 6 or 8 feet and bring them together in one tailpipe and you've added great huge gobs of output."

Yes this will be in the 64 dart.
Target rpm ? 5200-6000

Don't want loud. I have one of those and have grown to hate it.

It will be with Lou's loaner block with a good flowing head and big valves.
Cam is most likely what you mentioned Lou.. I will have to check for sure at the garage.
Here is the merge I was looking at:

Looks like a nice Y-pipe. I bet you would pick up 5 HP or maybe none by going to 2.5 into 3" with that setup. I'd do 2X2" into 2.5" and join 'em a bit behind the X as I said. You might get a bit more low end by putting the Y 12" or more behind the X, but I do not have specific experience with that.

Happy building,
Lou

Got all of the Parts ordered except for the muffler - Not sure what I want to use for that yet.

Can Just use a Pipe in place of the muffler until I decide if needed.

I would like something Light and Quiet - Maybe a burns stainless one?

Not sure about burns stainless. I like the Jones quiet tone mufflers, but they are not super light. I bet the Walker Super Turbo is fairly light.

I like the Flowmaster scavenger Y's. currently have a 2.25" to 3" on my valiant.

Lou, Maybe you mean dynomax Super Turbo? Something likeThis?

as opposed to $omething like this from Burn$

We'll see.

Yes, I guess Dynomax makes super turbo now. Looks same as in old days. Not sure of wt, just fuzzy memory of having one. Burns are nicer I'm sure. No idea on noise for those.

I think I have this behind my 170. It is quiet in car even I dont have any tailpipe, it just dumps down before rear axle. If you want tailpipe, shorter muffler would be better. At least in early A's.

I have Clifford shorties, 2" tubing into a Flowmaster Y-pipe, 2 inch in, 2.5"out to a 3 "Flowmaster Super 10 "muffler." The system seems to work well, making good power but, I do NOT recommend the Super(loud)10. I use it because it was free and don't do a lot of street driving.
