Hi all, Tanks Inc has a has a gas tank set up for in tank electric pump and return line. This would be great and solve several issues on with my 62 Lancer fuel injection project. It seems that people have successfully and unsuccessfully used 63 tanks in a 62. How much of a stretch would it be to put a 64 tank in a 62? Is the filler neck location the same? Are there clearance issues? I'm fabricating fuel lines and running after market S/U and plan on relocating the strap. And possible secondary securing strap on the tank. Will this work? 63 and 64 thru 66 tanks are basically the same except 63 uses an O ring type seal for the filler neck and 64-66 uses a grommet. Fill tubes are the same for the same body style ( I believe wagons are different than 2-4 door ) |

Another source of information would be Tanks.Inc as they should have access to part prints and manufacturing data. |

Just spoke to Cory at Tanks Inc and it sounds like the 64 tank will work in my 62. Unfortunately the are out of stock for a bit. |

I just put a Tanks brand tank in Ryan's 65 Valiant and it is a nice unit. It fit the car fine but the filler neck hole is about 1/2"-3/4 " farther forward than the original tank. The filler neck fits fine after I trimmed the floor a bit but the rubber/metal cover that goes around it does not fit as it normally would. Just some more info for you!

Right on! I just got mine from Tanks Inc. It looks great. I'll check for fit tomorrow. I'm prepared to relocate the fuel line and strap. I'll called Tanks Inc per DadTruck's advice before I ordered. Cory was super helpful. I will attempt to detail the modifications for installing on the 62 and send them to tanks inc and post here for others wishing to make this modification. Happy to do it Rob! I got the tank in place and it appears to fit quite well. The location of the supply and return lines will be a bit challenging as it is directly under the far front of the trunk floor. I think the wisest choice would be creating an access hole with cover. However I'll use 6an and cross fingers. The strap must move rearward. And I may add a second strap due to reading an earlier thread where a member dropped a later tank in a toad while driving! Measure once cut twice... It looks good, but I will give a confirmation once it's in place and holding fuel. Cheers, Barnaby |

Ok. I have the tank installed and not without some problems. I'm fairly confident that the strap mounting hole for J bolt passenger side and slot driver side need to move rearward 2 1/2 inches. More importantly the recess for the spare in trunk floor obstructs the tank from sitting as far rearward as it should. The filler neck is no longer centered in the trunk floor cutout, and it is not possible to screw the gasket back down in position. This also means that the filler neck is passing through the tank grommet at a very slight angle which may affect the seal. I will update when I verify the seal is secure. It is possible I made a mistake or oversight. Cheers, Barnaby |

I have not actually seen your fuel tank project. But I believe that I would modify the existing spare tire well to allow the gas tank to set in its proper location. As it sounds like that solves the floor gasket and filler tube alignment issues. I guess, unless that changes the spare tire well so much that it no longer accepts the spare tire. If that is the case then I would hire a professional welder - fabricator and modify the fuel tank to fit properly. Since the fuel tank is new and has not had gas in it, it should be safe to weld on. The second option may cost some coin, that is the nature of our hobby. I believe that you had mentioned that Tanks Inc had seemed to indicate that the alternative fuel tank would fit, if that if true, I would also be back on the phone with them. They should know. |
