Not sure where this goes so I put it here. My starter works and cranks the engine great. However it has a weird sound. The starter sounds fine when it’s out. It could just be me I don’t know, which is why I come here to people with way more brains and experience than I do! It sounds like my timing is off when it’s being cranked over. Hard to explain the sound. The timing is dead on and has had a new chain and sprocket recently. I tested those and the marks from the original when I changed them. Also checked where tdc was and it was right. (I knew y’all would ask that). Anyway it’s like it’s smooth then a slight rough spot then back to smooth. I’ve also checked the teeth on the flywheel ring. All teeth there and in good shape. Btw it’s a 78 d100 slant with a a230 trans. Is there a way to figure out if I need a shim plate or maybe a way to check the flywheel while still in? I appreciate all of y’all more than you know! The wisdom here is beyond incredible

Could be your ign timing is too far advanced. Try retarding the timing 5-10 deg and see if it helps. Make sure you mark it so you can go back to where it was in case the engine runs better at the previous setting.

Thanks. I’ll give that a try. Anyone know what starter is considered the mini one? I’d love to swap mine over and get a little more room.
And the timing I’m sure was way high. Haven’t checked it in awhile. Last time I did it was all the past the marks I could see.

The "super-mini" starter is for a 2005-2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.7L V8 and manual transmission. It is the most compact starter option anyone has found yet (Thanks Dan!), but it requires some minor mods. First you have to drill out one mounting hole on the starter; one of them is threaded, but the Slant's starter bolts both go straight through and thread into the engine block [edit: actually into the trans bell housing]. Next you have to countersink one of the bell housing bolt holes on your engine block, so you can run a flat head Allen-socket bolt into the transmission bell. The solenoid interferes with the hex bolt that normally goes there.

I probably wouldn't go this direction unless you REALLY need the space, and if so, think about having a spare on hand in case your super-close exhaust pipes end up baking it to death. These are harder to find, even at parts stores. Outside of a large city, you probably won't get a new replacement for a couple days.

My exhaust is stock. I just want something a little smaller and easier to handle. I’m not getting any younger but I plan to keep this old truck for a long time to come. Why would be a “mini” that works with a manual besides that one? Or is that the only option? Thanks for your time sir

My guess is your particular ring gear and starter and bellhousing and engine block all need to be replaced. lol.

What I mean is....it sounds as though the relationship between the two gears - the ring gear and the starter gear - is on the tight side....so tight that at one point during rotation they begin to fight with one another. That's why it sounds OK then sounds funny then OK then funny, etc.

I'd try loosening the starter and nudging it away from the centerline of the engine a little to see if that affects the noise.

And regardless, I'd toss the original starter in favor of a newer, smaller version.

Steve,

It depends on your budget and needs, both types fit any high mount starter slant six bellhousing set up with a gear reducton starter.
The old style which is easy to get in junkyards for 20-30 bucks (or you can burn up an autozone chinese special for $50...), it's much lighter than
the stock 1.5hp or 1.8hp V-8 starter. The donor vehicle is a Dodge Truck with the 3.9,5.2, or 5.9L Magnum engine 1992-1994. These are pretty
easy to maintain, I've only had to swap out the contacts on a junkyard model once for $15 and 30 minutes of bench work. This starter will require
a slight mod to the wiring terminals to fit the starter...or you can buy a replacement set that is a better fit...this unit will bolt right into the stock
bellhousing manual or auto.

The super mini Frank is talking about only comes from one mopar configuration noted above and will cost much more than the above mini,
it will fit the slant six as noted above with high starter bellhousing and gear reduction style starter and will require the mods noted above to
install.
Thanks that’s the info I needed

Awesome. I will try this. Sounds like what mine is doing for sure.

I, for the first time, swapped a slant over to the 5.2L mini starter. The difference was so spectacular that I can't quite put it into words. The old starter would start it, the new starter starts it. I think it also takes substantially less power to do so, which leaves more cranking power to do things like fire spark plugs, because Dad's car fires off virtually instantly, and it's amazing.

Gotta wait n see til I do my engine swap/ but by the way mine sounds when it starts, I'm expecting to see a bad spot on the ring gear. I've changed starters (stock style for 85, it's what I had sitting here) no difference. More damage from the PO.

The mopar OEM starters are old and have been rebuilt so many times they are junk. Huge, heavy, underpowered and very old tech. The mini-starters described above, the newer high torque units, are a breath of fresh air for anyone used to the old Mopar starters. They start the engine efficiently and quietly, take up way less space, and look nice as well. A solid investment upgrade for any slanter.

…unless you buy a new one from Old Car Parts Northwest (they go by on eBay fairly often, too.)

Bigger and heavier than the mini starters, yes.

No, they have plenty of power. Otherwise Slant-6 engines would have been unstartable for decades, and that didn't happen, so…yeah.

Much like…the Slant-6 engine.

Speak for yourself, please. To me, the sound of the Chrysler gear-reduction starter (in good condition) is a central part of the experience of driving a Slant-6 car. I freely acknowledge the mini starter—if you get a good one—is lighter, smaller, and faster. But driving an old Dart that sounds like a Toyota or a '97 Dakota when cranked is a real detraction for me.

I agree with every point Dan makes, except the last.

A new style Mopar starter does not make your Slant Six-swapped Superbird sound like a Toyota any more than your 392 Hemi-swapped Valiant sounds like a Toyota.

Mopar pioneered the gear reduction starter (and the Hemi). So ANY vehicle that uses a gear reduction starter sounds like a Mopar, not the other way around. Toyota, and many others, copied Mopar when it comes to the GR starter much as they copied the hemi combustion chamber. The fact that the gear noise evolved a little over the decades is just life. Only the golden voice of Liza Minelli has stayed constant for over 50 years.

But I gotta admit....I have a big pile of unwanted 60's starters. I can hardly drive down the road with one, knowing it's a bunch of dead weight (and space) along for a free ride.
