That is what we are here for...

Joking aside, your post was pretty general.
http://www.slantsix.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6552

Look at this from a reader's point of view, here is a new person to the board who has a $100 engine (car?), he has not done any past engine work and wants advice on how to rebuild an engine.

We need to take a few steps back and ask about the current condition of the car / engine, does it run now? What are the general plans, a daily driver?

The other "red flag" for me was the comment about doing the rebuild and going to college, both are major undertakings, do you have the time and money for both?

If you are serious about doing your first engine rebuild and if this engine is in a car that is currently running, I would advise that you look for another SL6 to rebuild "on the side", then swap it in when it is finished.
Have you read this article?

I am a non traditional student at school and need some manual dirty labor like i used to do before i went back to college on the weekends. I have a reliable daily driver right now for zipping back and forth to school so this is strictly a weekend project for performance. I got the car last year and it ran ok but i had to change the roters, brakes, calipers, sparks, wirers and my compression was 110,100,110, 60,70,and 90., so i knew there was a problem with my rings or pistons.. or my lifters were to tight. I have alot of old mechanic friends and never had the money or drive to get into it but this car is my chance. I started a summer buisness on the side of my regular job to have enough cash to do this and i am in the area of $1000 for this project. i knew it was alot to ask as a first timer but i hoped and am thankful for the info. Garage is cleaned out and shes comming out this week. :D
thanks again Doctor Dodge

Cool,... 8)
Ask detailed questions as you go and expect little to no support from local shops. (unless you get lucky and find someone who "gets it")

I learned long ago that I will do stuff that I want to do, don't worry about what other think. You will always catch some "flack" for building-up a Slant... for me, that is part of the fun.
