Does anyone have any info on the lightweight batteries such as the Braille’s. I was wondering about Jump starting one if they got dead. Considering my options for the future. My battery is 4 years old now and still works fine. But if I can save 20# when I need one it may be nice. |

I have used Braille and Odyssey batteries. They work fine and you jump them. The issue is that if they sit dead for a while, or you do not charge them with a "gel cell" trickle charger, they can fail early. One of them lasted 7+ yrs, but most of them have only lasted 4 yrs or so. Now I just get a 340 CA (the higher zoot/amp) lawn tractor battery and run that. They are cheap and tend to last 3-4 yrs. If they fail early, big deal I am only going to spend about $60 to replace it instead of $200+. I have one in Project V that has lasted over 3 yrs and it cranked my 11:1 motor no problem. Need to watch it at the track as these can run down rather quickly if you run an elec fan in the pits for a while. They are about 20 lbs, IIRC, so same as an Odyssey (925 size/version) or Braille and you can buy them anywhere. The warranty is very short, but that does not affect their ability to last a few or even several years. I have run the Odyssey 580 size in Project V but that was too much on the edge and it would leave me hanging sometimes at the track. Those are like 16 lbs. Lithium batteries are coming down in price and they weigh nothing (about 7 lbs), BUT they will not crank in temps much below freezing (maybe 10 deg F limit but can't recall). Recently, they are making ones that have protection so you don't have to be so careful about charging. I have shied away from those so far, but maybe for a car I won't daily/distance drive. Std 1st gen Miata battery is also pretty small and relatively light and will crank your motor just fine. Lou |

Below freezing is OK. I think the cutoff is like 10F, but they may have a special battery (lower capacity/power) that will work at 0F or lower. Mostly, it does not snow when it's colder than 10F anyway... Lou |
