How it's going, thanks to my friend, Patrick (who, unlike me, knows what he's doing):

(That's a mockup motor. The stroker is in the shop.)

We've got spool brackets,

truck brackets (shout-out to Greg Ondayko),

and '64-'66(?) A-body brackets.

We've got some universal "biscuit" mounts. I ordered a set of rectangular rubber mounts to match the A-body brackets, too.

The frame is a "Tribute-T" from Speedway, with the Chevy mounts option (as opposed to the flattie mounts). I've never built a car, and Patrick has never installed a slant. We're scratching our heads about how to position and mount the motor. We haven't even determined whether we should build onto the intact Chevy mounts, modify them, or remove them completely.

My first thought is to cut out the Chevy mounts, find an A-body K-member, modify it to fit the chassis, and use the A-body brackets/mounts. Thoughts?

Should we aim to postion things so that the crank is dead-centered along the long axis of the car, or is there any advantage to a slightly offset and/or cockeyed installation?

Any input from folks who have planted a slant in a hot rod would be greatly appreciated. (Old6rodder? Lindross?)

Forget about the K-frame idea. That would be too heavy, awkward, and would not fit your frame rails. Best bet is to position the engine where you want it with jacks and such. Then, just see where any of the stock factory slant brackets put you. I would cut the Chevy mounts out unless they happen to work out with the slant mounts. It's not exactly rocket science, just weld up some frame perches and let er rip. OR...use an engine plate (but that would likely be a big pain in the hind end).

Great project!
I don't know your use in mind, drag, street?
On my Colt I ended up putting the engine about the only place it would fit!
I wanted some offset and I would have wanted to have it on scales and work out what was best.
You could check with Jeff Kendall and his dad Bill.
They both have HAMB slant powered bucket style drag cars.

If you can use them, the spool mounts are safest in terms of predictably/consistently controlling engine location, especially with a powerful motor. You'd want to get rid of the compressed-cow-poo bushings and press in a set of these. Second preference would be these in the '62-'66 brackets.

When you're building from the ground up you put stuff wherever you want. All you need to do is make sure your driveshaft and pinion angles are good.

A laser level and angle finder will be your friends.

There you are! Heh. I didn't get them, and figured you'd been busy, and then later I couldn't find our PM thread (the brilliant idea of checking sent messages only occurred to me now :roll: ), and I couldn't recall if we'd discussed this in any other format/forum, and and and... We couldn't bolt the left side spool to my mockup motor (a 2463230-10) because the trailing edge of the bracket wants to be in the same spot as ~0.09" of the dipstick tube. Is there much variability in the placement of dipstick tubes and spool bracket bolt holes? (Maybe I just got unlucky, and I need to try another left side bracket.)

I'm thinking 70% street, 15% flying sideways on frozen lakes, and 15% SCCA somethingoranother (if we can make it compliant).

Scales are beyond our scope, I think, though a perfectly-balanced roadster would be awesome. I'm just wondering if there's anything particular about how a slant should go into a car (apart from the obvious slant).

I agree with Badvert65. When we mounted the slant six in the Crown Vic frame that is under my 71 D100, we mounted up the transmission and kept the engine on the hoist. We had cut the engine mounts off the old frame and left them bolted to the engine and then just welded the new mounts to the new frame. Fairly easy, but I had the help of a welding and frame genius.

My advice would be to go from back to front then--driveshaft, transmission, then place the engine where it would naturally fit.

Sounds like an excellent project and I hope you will keep us posted.

Very cool project. Agree with comments about. Get the axle perpendicular to the frame rails, and you want the engine perp to the axle. The engine axis can be offset from the axle u-joint/yoke but should be perpendicular to the rear axle (AKA, inline with the pinion shaft axis).

Kesteb tells me the spool brackets should fit. Time to look for another spool! I'm not ruling out the old style brackets yet; I just want to keep the options open.
