| Post subject: | Electric fuel pump |
Should I install an electric fuel pump in my 61 Valiant? Mechanical fuel pump works ok, but as I drive the car infrequently I need to prime the cabbie to make starting easier. My mechanic says not the best idea to install an electric fuel pump; later models yes, but not in the 61'. |

Only subjective, but I run electrics in all my slants. Though always with a regulator to keep the pressure below 3 lbs., as I don't trust'em. It's a necessity with the SUs I like, but the BBSs & BBDs I've run liked'em as well. We also run the same on the BBS on our animation slant on the Rose float. |

I understand your problem, which an electric pump would cure. But only use an electric pump, if it is installed correctly. If I were doing it, I would install as a "primer" pump, only. Mount the pump near the tank, and protected from road debree. Wire with a fuse/circuit breaker, and with a momentary switch, to energise the pump to prime the carb only. |

Yeah... I'd never trust the carb's needle and seat to be the pressure regulator, or the fuel pump reaching its maximum pressure to limit things. Always use a pressure regulator. I'm even a fan of bypass-style regulators on carbs, basically an EFI type regulator with a lower set pressure and return line. However, with a stock-ish slant six and a carb, I would prefer a mechanical pump for simplicity.

Do you know what brand or type of regulator you use?
