Post subject:  Transfer case question: Can I Rotate it clockwise?

This question pertains to an engine swap project I am chipping away at.

As presently installed the engine is to high for the intermediate driveshaft, so I have some Ujoints that are unhappy above 2700RPM. The engine is as low as I can get it, and still have room between the oil pump and the front differential.. so looking for other solutions.

The truck is a Dodge M37, NP435 4 speed and NP200 transfer case.

As an experiment, I put 1" spacers under the drivers side transfer case mount, thus rotating the left side up so that it is more inline with the transmission. That moved the oil fill-level sight plug up, so I added some more gear oil, and took it for a test drive. As far as I can tell that has solved the driveline vibration..

Here is my question: Can I get away with having the transfer case tipped up if I have the oil up to the sight plug? I know the mid 60's Dodge swept line trucks had their transfer case a quite an angle, and wonder if I can do the same here?

Any and all thoughts welcome.

Subjective response.

Have a Ford transfer case on our Rose Parade float that we rotated about 25*. Oil level, however, now measured with a cobbled up "dip wire" (through the fill hole) after estimating the level change at that position. Been that way for over a decade now, with no issues.

how many RPM does the float's engine turn in typical use?

I've yet to get above 3000 RPM, once it is fully road ready, I would expect 3500 is a realistic maximum and that would only be about 10% of the time or less.

"Parade proper" speed's a moderate walk (per their rule book), which is around 1500 tach for our set up.
We regularly get "catch up" spurts up to 2500 as the parade "accordions". Regularly hit 3500+ during convoy to & from though. The thing is, that's hauling 20 to 35 tons of steel & flowers with the transfer case locked in low, per the book. Pulling that up even a small hill with our 390fe tends to make the drive train earn its keep.

This is encouraging to hear that what I am doing might be a possibility.

Are you measuring down to the estimated "previously full" mark on the transfer case with the wire, or have you established a new "full" level, that needs to be found with the dip wire?

New "full" level obtained by draining the case and refilling it at the new angle with the book amount.
