Post subject: | Trouble installing Slant 6 today |
Attempted to install my overhauled slant 6 today in my 1962 Dodge Dart 330 sedan. I left the automatic transmission in the car and removed just the engine. I could not get the engine to line up with the transmission to hit the two tabs to then get the bolts started. We tried with the motor mounts on but struggled with getting the engine to hit the mounts and line up appropriately to the transmission. Motor is back on the stand and I guess the transmission will have to come out to mount to the engine on the lift, then go into the car. Any suggestions or experience with the same? Thanks GPK1961 |

Short chain between the 2 threaded 3/8 holes on top of the head alongside the valve cover rail. |

I have had my best slant six engine install success with: 1) leave the motor mounts off 2) get a couple of 2.5 long or so bolts that thread into the block to transmission mounting holes and cut the hex heads off of them. Thread the studs into the blocks transmission mounting face and use those to align the block to the transmission. 3) have a jack under the transmission towards the front-bell end so you can move the transmission mounting face up or down to facilitate alignment. 4) as mentioned above sling the motor so it is close to its installed angle and tilt. |

I do it pretty much like John, only I put the mounts on. Jack trans as high as possible, use long bolts in the 7/16" holes to align motor/trans and be patient working it together. |

Same for me. I will add one thing. I put a screwdriver slot in the guide bolts. Just in case they are a little snug.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I am going to take the manifold off (I pulled it without) as I think the extra weight is making the tilt to the right mount and the proper angle of the engine more of a challenge. I will attach the lift differently to get the tilt and the guide bolts are key (now that I have tried without). A few days to let my back recover (and my son to forget how much 'fun' we had) and then try again! This forum is the best. Jerry in Frisco TX. |

I just dropped the/6 into a pickup with manifolds attached, I wound up putting the driver side motor mount on while hanging from the cherry picker and the pass side mount, once I had the motor bolted to the trans no problems. I do remember swapping a couple of them in different cars/ years ago, and (before I knew the real reason for those threaded holes in the heads)and basically having to have a 2nd guy to help position the motor as it was lowered into position but I had the picker rigged much differently in those. This most recent swap went much easier than those did in other cars I did back then, and I did this one completely without any help |

UPDATE We got the engine in. Great advice here -- and the key for us was get a good angle on the engine hoist, leave the driver side motor mount off initially, use the guide bolts in the engine and lower the engine into the right side motor mount hole, then adjust the transmission. I did take the manifold off and I think that helped the angle problem. Thanks all - now it's assembly time. GPK1961 |
