Hey everyone, I've had issues where the fuel cap gasket seems to melt and stick to the filler tube of my 1970 Dodge Dart. I'm just wondering if anyone has any good sources of just the gasket for the fuel cap? Also wondering if anyone has good ideas as to why this is happening, and what I can do to prevent it? ![]() |

It calls for using a gasket made of an appropriately gasoline-resistant material. Viton, for example. You will likely have to do some hunting; I don't have the measurements for what you need, but I think a 2" outside diameter is probably roughly what you're after. The inner diameter will be a bit of a wildcard. Here's a start, and if none of those is appropriate you might wind up writing here, here, here, here, and here. Or maybe get some 0.050"-ish Viton sheet and a gasket punch set and make your own. |

you can also Check with Detroit Muscle Technologies. I Spoke to James Fillmore at Carlisle and he was going to help me get the Same gasket for my '64 Dart. Greg |

Just a small update here. Over the winter months I picked up a 6" x 6" x 1/32" sheet of Viton rubber sheet from Amazon. I feels like the 1/32" is a good thickness at least compared to the gaskets that came with my previous fuel caps. I used the deteriorating gaskets to mark out and cut new replacement gaskets. They are not perfect since it's just me and a scissors, but they fit fine and should perform the task. Later this Summer, I will update to see if the Viton holds up. Thanks all for the suggestions. edit: Oh, also as for the OD of the gasket, I measured with a caliper, and that came out to 2.135". Seems to be a pretty good size. |

Hey, Beitie, I'm cheap and you may be, too! Have you any interest in selling one or two 2-1/4" squares of your 6x6" to recoup your investment? Should be able to go in a regular envelope with normal postage. I'd hate to spend a whole $15 and have all that extra staring at me from a spot by my workbench for, probably, the rest of my life. Thanks! – e |

Quote: Hey, Beitie,
I went with the 6x6" because I had two gas caps that I wanted to fix, and I broke the very first one I made. So long story short, I do not have enough material left to make any more that will fit. Oh well, I'm just glad I got it to work.

Thanks anyway, Beitie! Do you feel that the 1/32" was the right thickness? I wasn't sure whether that was good, or whether it should be 1/16", because my gasket had gotten thinner as it dried out over 60 years. Thanks, – Eric |

1/32" is correct for sure. I compared the thickness with my deteriorating ones, and it's perfect. Here's a link to the sheet I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y5 ... UTF8&psc=1 |

Thanks! I bookmarked a few of them. I just wanted to be sure of the thickness before ordering one. – Eric |

Quote: 1/32" is correct for sure. I compared the thickness with my deteriorating ones, and it's perfect. Okay, I ordered a sheet of 1/32" Viton and did my own gas cap.My original gasket was surprisingly flexible after 60 years, though it did have a few non-communicating radial cracks. I was able to get it off without breaking it. I measured my original gasket and the new 1/32" gasket, using a micrometer, with enough force that I could pull the rubber through with a "medium" force that didn't "drag" the rubber. Original: 0.047" Amazon: 0.029" (1/32" = 0.031", so within acceptable variation) So, the 1/32" gasket is about 62% as thick as the original (including any shrinkage over 60 years). I cut two gaskets and doubled them up, making them about 1-1/4 times as thick as the original, which made the cap a tighter twist to close, but not at all unreasonably so (my standard is, "Would my wife be able to do it / find it unnaturally difficult?"). So, for those who wish to do this, here's another data point. – Eric |

MD, thanks so much for that update. I never had an OEM one, so possibly worth going with a thicker size. As for longevity, this one has lasted all spring-summer. Something that could not be said for the gasket that came with both the YearOne cap, and the OER cap that came from Classic Industries. |

I'm glad it was helpful! So far, after a few months and a couple of thousand miles, the two-layer seals have worked great. I've filled the tank to the very top a few times, and never had any leakage. And the seals are still pliable. The two seals together made the cap a bit tight to install the first few times, but now it feels quite normal (we've all opened these caps when these cars were common on the roads), and I kind of think I could probably fit a third layer on without too much resistance. I'll wait and see – if there's no leakage, there's no need for a better seal. Thank you for posting this writeup in the first place! – Eric |

Classic Industries is a garbage company selling garbage parts, often at LOLROFL prices, and "OER" is a fraudulent bit of branding/marketing; it's supposed to stand for "original equipment replacement".
