I am doing my homework on building a big 170. Has or is anyone building one? I don't see Vega pistons at Rock Auto. Just curious. |

I grabbed the slant six engine book and Doug talks about 2.2 Pistons on page 118. I would assume a turbo piston would be dished and a carb engine might not be. 88.9 MM would be 3.50. |

You will have to check on rod length Stan. To use 2.2 pistons in a 225 block you need +.300" longer rods. |

The 2.2 pistons (dished or flattops) will not work in a 170, unless you use custom rods. Then you don't gain anything, with flat tops because the 170 is a zero deck motor from the factory, and you would lose compression with the turbo (dished) piston. Don't know what combo would look like using a 198 crank. Personally, I never could see the reasoning of a 198 stroked 170, unless to take advantage of the weight break (in the slant six rules) using the low deck block, to set a record. I have an 170 engine, here, that someone tried to do like that using stock 170 rods. Then he had the block decked (about) 170 thousandths. He wound up with a thin deck .045 over, stock compression ratio 170 engine. He had the 170 rods rebuilt, crank ground, hydraulic turbo grind cam, lifters, pistons, rings, bearings. I bought everything for cheap. I can use all the parts in a 225, except for the rods. Those I can use in one of my 170's, the block can be used for a boat anchor, if I can't think of anything else. |

I think you mean a 198 crank in 170? Please clarify. I have OEM GM pistons on the shelf for that setup and have all parts prepped but it is on hold... Lou |

Lou, were you asking Charrlie about the crank? I can remember if we talked about your build, do you remember what pistons you found? I will take notes this time. |

I was asking you, Stan. When you say "big" 170, do you mean 198 crank, or were your just funnin'? The pistons I have fit stock 170 rods and 198 crank in a 170 block. They are: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/uem-1486hc-5mm Gets you close to zero deck (0.050" in hole w/no milling?) and 210 cu in. Lou |

What about CR? You do gain some with the added cubes, but the pistons have a 12cc dish.

CR as low as about 8:1 with a stock head, ranging to over 11:1 with a highly milled head and milling block for zero deck pistons. I have a 45 cc head that would get me just over 9:1 and I would likely run moderate boost (~10 psi). It is not hard to make a 35 cc head for 11:1. Likely I would go for the boost motor, maybe even as low as 8.5:1 comp, and not want/need to run a big cam or cut valve reliefs. Lou |

Not funnin, I am being serious, this time. I have the 198 crank, well Slantzilla has it, but that is another story. Thanks for the piston link, I will add that to the notes. And since I am a NA guy, I will need to figure out the CR issue. |

That is about what stock pistons, rods, and crank will get with the same spec head on a 198 motor. and you only give away a few cubes, and save a ton of work and money. Plus you don't have issues of piston to valve clearance. Please tell me why a 198 stroked 170 is a good idea. Sorry, I still don't see it.

About 20 lbs less weight (block) and smaller/lower profile engine. Not big deals, but why not? Why would anyone build a 170 instead of a 225? Lou |

I agree. That's the only reason I can see for going to the expense and amount of labor.PS: Rob, give me a call. |

I mainly did it because I had so many 170 engines/parts left over from years ago. At the time I had no 225 engines.
