Hello All,

My dad and I are in the midst of putting a 1983 Dodge D250 back on the
road. Originally it had a 5.2L (318), V8 but at some point in its life
the V8 was replaced with a Slant 6. I believe the engine is an early
80s version as it has the electronic spark control and EGR.

I'm trying to figure out how the previous owner handled the power
steering change when the engine was swapped. The Slant 6 ended up with
a PS belt running from the front crank pulley (crank has a 3 belt
pulley), at an offset of ~19mm (3/4”), to the PS pump. Needless to say
this is not good, plus it creates lots of squealing at full lock.

I've created a temporary solution by modifying the PS pump bracket to
engine block bracket to better align the PS pump pulley with the front
crank pulley. It is now within 1 or 2mm (~1/16”), of being correct.
Although better, the modification does not provide the best support
for the PS pump.

Attached is a picture of the modified PS pump mounting (Power Steering
Pump Bracket Modification - 3). As mentioned, the set up when the
truck was purchased had the PS pump pulley ~19mm (3/4”), offset –
basically in line with the crank / water pump / alternator belt.

The auto recyclers here with 'older cars' are few and far between. The
two I visited had the exact same brackets on the PS pump. However, I
was not able to compare the engine block bracket as the pumps were
already off the vehicle. :-(

I assume I either have the incorrect engine block bracket or incorrect
PS pump brackets or both? Any insight???

Looking forward to your reply.

Thank you and take care,
K&Sons

I have an 83 D150 that I added power steering to. Tomorrow I will get a few photos to post here for you to look at. From what I can see on your photo, the block mount looks correct.
The slant power steering is driven off the front damper pulley. The center drives the water pump and alternator and the inside pulley drives an AC compressor and or an air pump when equipped.

the block mount looks the same as what I have, the actual front and rear pump mounts a different and are moving the pump canister forward.

I didn't realize that truck started with manual steering.
I thought power steering had been made "standard" by then.
I had a 79 d100 that was manual everything

Hello All,

First, apologies for the delayed update - conflicting priorities. :-)

Many thanks to Supercharged for the pictures, they immediately 'solved' the issue for us. Turns out that the current brackets were
the correct ones, but the pulley was incorrect! The pulley on the pump had the incorrect offset (too shallow). Located the correct pulley -
problem solved!!

Another great example of the value of a forum like this.

Thank you and take care,
DadTruck
