Why is it that people think I am crazy to build a slant six? What is wrong with building something different? My dad asked me why I wanted to waste my $$$ on the six when I could build a 360 for cheaper. I keep telling people I want to turbo my slant and people look at me like I am crazy, they tell me why dont I just swap in a 318 or 360 in it? I tell them because I like to see the persons face, when I blow by them and tell them they were just beat by a turbo 4 or a turbo 6 in this case. I made 273rwhp with my ford 2.3 turbo, so I should be able to make atleast as much with close to the same mods.

I wouldn't let it bother you. With me it goes in one ear and out the other.

What's wrong with being crazy???

Some like being different, some people like a challenge, whatever it may be in your case, it would be cheapest and easiest to build some 350 camaro, but then what would you have? Dare to be different, and when people say, think or act as though you're crazy, take it as a compliment! Know that at least you're not a follower of the masses as they likely are.

I've built Chrysler big blocks, small blocks and the slant six, and I assure you, the slant six gets more oohs and aahs than all the others have combined, even my dual-quad 440 fenderwell exhaust '65 Belvedere.

My main fear now is that there are too many guys jumping on the slant six bandwagon for my liking!

Dennis the bandwagon affect can be good and bad. Bad in that parts become rarer and more expensive, good because the parts reproduced might increase

...and bad when ever'body and their brother's got one! Kinda takes the fun outta being different.

Then we'll have to take one step further backwards and go to the pre 60 flatheads.

I might get cursed at for mentioning this but I always wonderd how my duster would move with a japenese 4 banger, or any japenese engine for that matter.

don't worry not everyone will want to join our bandwagon, we'll always be outnumbered 3 to 1 by the small block guys at least....Besides with all the different mill buildups here no one will have 'the same' recipe as people improve upon what others have done ...

Things that are cool about building up the six:

Many of the parts are easy to get to in the engine bay.
With gas prices rising in some areas, getting 20 mpg isn't that bad.
Your car will be better balanced and lighter than the V-8 counterpart.
Getting a block or running motor is as cheap as free.
It's more fun to see the look on the V-8 guys face at the next light after you leave him in the dust, his girlfriend asks you what you have, and you leave him in the dust again while yelling 'Slant Six'....
You can daily drive it without being crucified by the insurance company.
You get to hang out with a bunch of good guys who don't have to prove that their 360 is better than your cast crank 340....
The motor is easy to pull.
At idle you can actually hear the stereo without going deaf.
You have a good support network.
You have a motor that I know will run 6 minutes and 54 seconds without oil or water, blow the #6 piston through the block, die..then fire up and run some more...(never had a 318 do that...nor a 400...even a chevy 305 only lasts 3 minutes under the same test...)
You can brag that you have long rods...(of course some Nash owners may beat you there...)

Don't mind them...they're just jealous that they can't do more with less...

(sounds like a .org T-shirt idea...Top 10 reason's why I have a Slant Six)

Who said we had to step back? I won't curse you, either. I'll laugh at you if you do that though! ;)

I have a trick, never been done before thing up my sleeve for deployment when slant six cars become all the rage (and hey, they already popularized wagons into the ground - those used to be cool and different) I'm not telling anyone what it is, but it's all "Mopar"...

By the way, I dunno about putting a sewing machine in a Duster for power, but I always thought a Mitsubiscuit Conquest TSI 340 powered street/handling car would be cool...

I have to tell you, I had a polyspherical 318 that I drove home several miles after the crank broke in two

You don't have to compromise on anything... It's still a free country (but for how much longer??) 8)

I haven't verified but a reputable friend told me a skyline does 1000hp.

Screw the Skyline. TA Performance just released a badass, super beefy aluminum block for the Buick V6 that will support horsepower in the 2000+ range. Not to mention the Skyline costs a fortune to build.

If the slant can only support around 350-400HP before breaking, you can't really consider it a serious choice for a performance engine. But for a street engine, it's great. 400 crank horses in a light little car will take out anything short of a Cobra- including mild Z28s and GTs- and would probably give the Cobra a run for its money. After you take his money, you can tow your boat to the docks and fill it up with gas. Ain't life grand? ;)

Now, if we had a billet crank and some good H-beam rods, there's no telling how much power this engine would support before breaking in half.

On the no oil issue, I was out working on my Dart one day when an old guy (friend of my dad's) stopped to talk. At first he tried to buy the car off me but I wouldn't have it, so we started shootin' the $#!+. He told me a story of a time he drove his brother's old slant six-powered Dart and his brother had ran it low of oil, and it started knocking a bit. So he figured the engine was toast anyways and decided to have some fun with it. He put it in park, idling, and put a huge rock on the accelerator to hold it to the floor. He said it ran like that, wide open, for a good hour before finally puking its guts out the oilpan.

While we're on the subject, a good friend of mine's dad had an old 76 Ford pickup with a 302. This thing had over 200K miles on it and was beat to hell. There wasn't a straight body panel on this sucker, as it had worked all its life. He started having problems with it running rough and not having oil pressure, so he parked it until he felt like working on it. Well, about a year later another friend of mine bought the truck for $100, cause he wanted the block to build a motor for his Mustang. They cranked the truck up to drive it on the tow dolly and off they went with it. When he got the motor disassembled they discovered the cam was broken in half and pieces of three pistons and rods were laying in the oilpan. And the damn thing still ran.

Good googly moogly, man! You wouldn't consider a 400 hp /6 a "performance" engine? Is your Alabama the one on planet Earth?? ;)

The Honda S2000 motor is rear wheel drive...
