Hello: Any thoughts on what would cause the speedometer to bounce wildly at highway (55mph) speeds? Speedometer cable was just replaced—no change from Original. Car is a stock 23k (actual) 1974 Dart with 904. Completely unmolested. See video here. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fMQzSX ... p=drivesdk Thoughts? Speedometer unit or gear in the transmission? Thanks. |

If the cable is fresh, it is unlikely the drive gear in the trans. Probably the gears in the speedo head need lightly lubes with some vaseline or other extremely light grease My '79 duster has 235,000 Miles on the chassis and speedo.. had to take it all apart one time yeats ago.. lubed it up carefully and thoughtfully with vaseline on the end of a q tip. Still runs fine even in the cold with no fuss. No factory cruise control on your car, correct? Greg |

No factory cruise. Car has obviously sat most of its life. Speed is fairly accurate below 40–here the needle vibrates quickly. Over 40 or so it bounces wildly and makes a metallic clinking sound. |

It could be something in the eddy current mechanism that drives the needle as well.. but no way to know for sure with out some disassembly and testing. Or send it to Shannon at redline gauge works or some other reputable speedometer rebuilder/ mechanic. Slantsixdan has a list of a few of them somewhere. |
