An engine needs only three things to run - a proper air/fuel mixture, compression, and a properly-timed spark. An engine that won't run is lacking one of these three items.

Did the engine run before? If so, what changed to cause it to stop running?

Check your spark. Pull a plug wire off a plug (it doesn't matter which one), stick a screwdriver in it, then hold the screwdriver about 1/4" away from a metal surface, like the fender. Have a friend crank the engine and you should see a spark jumping from the screwdriver to the fender. If not, you don't have spark.

Check to make sure your engine is choked while cranking. Look in the top of the carburetor, there should be a flapper door at the top. That's your choke, and you need it to be closed while first starting the engine. When it fires up, open the choke.

If it still won't start, pull a spark plug. It should be wet with fuel. If not, you're probably not getting fuel. Try pouring a small bit of gas in the carburetor and crank it. If it tries to run, you're not getting gas to the carburetor or the carb is not delivering it properly.

Your engine is turning over slowly? Inspect the battery terminals for corrosion and make sure they're secured tightly. Put a voltmeter on the battery terminals - anything less than 12V is unacceptable. Try swapping the battery out for a known good one, or put a battery charger on the one you've got.

If none of these items turns up anything, you can try a compression test, though it's probably not your problem.

Try *all* of the above, then come post your results.
