Post subject:  Manifold Heat Control Valve, Spring Broken

How do I replace a broken spring on the manifold heat control valve?

I recently got a 65 Barracuda. It has a .40 over rebuilt 225 in it. It appears to have a stock 1bbl intake manifold with a Carter (1695 ?) carb. The exhaust manifold has the word CHINA stamped into it so I am strongly assuming it is an aftermarket replacement. It has the large round counterweight on the exhaust manifold heat control valve. There are two bi-metallic springs on the control valve shaft behind the counterweight. I grabbed the counterweight and turned it (not too hard) and the end of one of the springs broke off!

It appears the butterfly valve is welded to the shaft so I can only assume that was done after installation. That makes me think I cannot remove the shaft to make this repair.

I cannot tell exactly where the broken end of the spring was previously connected before I broke it.

Where are you located? I have several good exhaust manifolds in my parts stash, all of them are factory units. It might be easier to just replace the manifold.

You'e got nothing to loose by seeing if you can get the circular weight thing off.

Maybe it is pressed on and getting it red hot with a rosebud would allow it to come off? I have no idea if it has been pressed on or welded on or what..

I am located in Fairfield, CA. It turns out to be the counterweight stop that broke. Do I have to remove the counterweight to replace the stop I ordered?

I have not begun to reassemble the top end yet so I am open to replacing the intake or exhaust manifold if that is the best and most economical efficient approach.

This thread suggests that it can be repaired with a new spring somehow.. deciding if you want to give it a try is up to you:

My bi-metal spring is in tact whether or not it has the proper "tension." It is the counterweight stop that ended up breaking. I found a new one on eBay and i am waiting for it to arrive. I am asking if anyone knows of a way to replace the stop without removing the counterweight. I am trying not to buy a whole new manifold when this one (part 14310 ?) appears otherwise in great shape. I do not know the brand of it, but it has the O2 port mentioned above.
