Hello all -

I got my rebuilt Slant re-assembled and back in the 62' Dart.

I established TDC by using a plug stop in the #1 cylinder.
I made the two marks and took the mid-point to be TDC.

Installed the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 plug.

It will crank and turn fast like it wants to go, but it won't catch.

Occasionally as I release the key and the starter stops it will slightly cough out of the carb.

I have spark and fuel.

What would you do next?

Much thanks - Jerry in Frisco TX

Many times when you think the distributor rotor is at #1 cylinder it is actually 1 tooth ahead or behind... due to yoir slanted viewing angle of the rotor / distributor.

Try reinstalling the Dist.. moving it 1 tooth forward first.. if that does not work then try 2 teeth back.

Good luck.

Greg

When you checked for #1 at TDC are you sure it was on compression, and not exhaust? You could possibly be 180 degrees out.

1) If You have the valve cover on, & don't plan on pulling it, pull the plugs from cyls. #1&#6.
Put the marks on TDC, then puff some compressed air into each just enough to hear which
one is bleeding air into the exh.&int. Once You have #6 bleeding, You have it right.
2) If the cover is, or can come off(or if You can see #1 intake rocker through opening),
watch for #1 int. to close. The next TDC is the correct one.
3) Put the timing mark on the desired base setting + 2deg., check the dist. rotor position.
Once it's pointed at #1, if it's points, use an ohmmeter starting with the dist. body rotated
clockwise(timing retarded, points closed), then turn the body counter clockwise untill
the ohmmeter signals the points are open. It will start. I had a '72 383 that was running
recently that suddenly was extremely hard to start & keep running. Showed good spark
cranking, condensor had failed, wasn't high mileage unit but it went.
If it's electronic, just line up the tooth with the pick-up core.
Good luck & let Us know how it's goin'.

The cough on key release has me wondering about the ballast resistor or contacts in the key.
Hot wire the coil and see what happens.
