Was there a difference in the cam cores by year other than specs ?

I have a new in the box Sealed Power CS709 cam that is for 81-87 225's.

Would it be a good candidate for a race only regrind ?

Jeff

That is a hydraulic cam. Are you going to use hydraulic or solid lifters?

On the core, the only difference I am aware of is the hydraulic cam has a groove on the rear bearing journal. This allowed more oil to the valve train. The solid cam had two intersecting oil metering holes. This oil groove is not an issue. I put a similar groove on my solid cams, then install a adjustable/variable restrictor in the oil passage to the rocker arms.

I would have it reground as a solid lifter cam.

I thought the hydraulic had narrower lobes, but it might be my own faulty memory/bias? Personally, I would find a solid cam core to regrind for solid. OR, I would call Ken at Oregoncamshaft.com and ask him if it is OK to do what you want to do.

Lou, you are correct. I just pulled a new stock hydro cam and a used MP 528 cam off the shelf. The lobes are narrower on the hydro cam. Also the cam bearing journals are narrower. Never looked at one that close before. And as I stated in my first reply, the difference in the oil groove/holes for valve train oiling.

The only other variation would be that earlier cams had a larger core diameter, the Crane cam I used in the K6 version 1.0 used one of those cores, which may limit the maximum design lift that it can be ground to.
