Post subject:  Help With Cam Selection?
Hey guys! I'm new to the slant sixes and I know that this is where are the experienced guys hang out...was hoping some of you could at least point me in the right direction as far as cams are concerned. I know that every build is different, every car is set up different, ever builder has a different ideas/expectations, etc...but with that said, hoping that if I fill in some of the blanks that some of you could give me your thoughts. This is all going to end up in my '68 Dodge A100 cargo van (surprisingly, only weighs about as much as a 60's Dodge Dart). Not taking it to the track, but I'd really like it sound and feel rowdy on the street! I'll be having the original 225 machined, the head worked over so it can breathe a bit better, and I've picked up some parts for it so far. The parts I've already got for the drivetrain are:

1. New Edelbrock 1404 manual choke 500 cfm carb.
2. New Offenhauser 4-barrel slant six intake.
3. New Aussie Speed Dutra Duals.
4. All aluminum case and aluminum tail shaft A833-OD (with overdrive)

I've got some cool stuff for a little cosmetic rebuild too:

1. New Offenhauser polished aluminum valve cover.
2. New Aussie Speed air cleaner.
3. New side pipes.
4. New Weld Racing Rodlite wheels.
5. New BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires.

The van started life as a 3-speed column shift manual, but I'm going to make up some custom rods so that I can floor shift it with that aluminum A833-OD trans. It's got it's original 8 3/4 rear with stock 3.91's in it (might change up the gearing?). Again, not trying to break any speed records, looking for a cam that will make it fun (and maybe a little sketchy) for the streets. I know everyone will have various opinions and I welcome them all...like I said, I'm new to the slant six game. THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

I would probably keep the 3.91's with the van and overdrive. Should be a nice all around ratio set.

What all are you doing to the head?

That might be the most important question to be answered in my opinion.

I had 3.91s in my 79 D100 with the same trans you do and a stock engine. It did pretty well with that combo.

The bright side is with that stick and 3.91 you can get away with quite a bit of camshaft.

Me personally, I'd find something like the old Mopar 528 cam.

Thanks for the responses guys! I ran by the shop today and checked the data plate on my A100 van...apparently it's got 3.55 gears in the 8 3/4...I had assumed that all of the A100's were 3.91's, but I guess I was mistaken. I ordered up some of the Hughes oversize 1.70 and 1.44 valves...sounds like they're the only ones doing the drop in oversize valves since Engnbldr retired from the game. Leaning towards having the cam reground by Oregon Cam Grinding once I know all of the specifics of the machine work that happens on my block and head. Super excited about the build, THANKS AGAIN!

Sounds like a very cool project. I highly suggest doing some bowl porting to take advantage of those valves and bring out more power across the power band. My gut says you should aim for 9.0 - 9.5:1 compression and then use an Oregon #346 cam. Little rumpity, and a good mid range street cam. Degree at 100 intake lobe centerline.

We can talk about more specifics as you move along...
