I happened upon a story about the Pontiac Trophy 4. I was unaware of this slanted 4 cylinder engine. The slant six was designed before it, and the Trophy 4 was admittedly just a 389 cut in half so to speak. It also had vibration issues and was only produced for 3 years in the Tempest. Very interesting though, looks like a mini-slant six. brian |

I saw that yesterday. Never knew that engine existed. Interesting for sure, not to mention the rear mounted transmission. |

Are you aware that International Harvester did the same thing with one of thier V-8's? Roger |

IH did that with the 304 v8 engine. That made a 152 CI 4 cylinder. The 4 cylinder motor had its own unique core package and casting tooling. But it was cast with two ‘wings’ on the side with the missing bank of cylinders that allowed the block casting to run down the same machining transfer line as the 304 v8 block. I remember that the 4 cylinder motor’s crank had much larger counter weights than the v8 block had. Other engine internal parts like the pistons, rods, valves, pushrods were common with the 304 v8. The exhaust manifold was also common. The intake manifold was unique to the slanted I4. It was fully water jacketed and used engine coolant to warm the intake runners. The slanted IH I4 was the base motor in the first generation Scouts. |

IIRC, the Tempest was the car that had the "rope" driveshaft connecting the motor to the transaxle. |

Yep, If you looked at the side view of the driveshaft, it looked like a rocker on a rocking chair. But if I remember correctly, it was enclosed in a housing like a "torque tube". I had forgotten about that engine. But remember the OHC six.

Consider what GM could have been today if they had continued to allow each division to share common components like lug nuts, sheet steel, tires,,, but also allowed each division independence in design and engineering. The short term profits from the GM ‘badge engineering’ took them down. |

Wasn't the 304 an engine they "borrowed" from AMC? The 4 cylinder motor had its own unique core package and casting tooling. My Dad had a 62 or 63 Tempest with that engine. Had a unique sound, our boxer would wait at the front screen door when she heard him coming home. Crazy thing, right..... No AC, roll down windows, no auto trans, how did we survive! |

Both AMC and IH had 304 CI engines. I believe the AMC and the IH 304’s were unique. I know the IH 304 was developed by IH, I know little of the AMC 304. The IH 304 was definitely a truck engine. Would have been a load in a car chassis. The IH 304 was part of the Small V8 series that IH launched in the early 60’s. The SV8 line consisted of: 266 CI 304 CI 345 CI 392 CI Engines. With each engine having unique blocks, heads and cranks. These were an addition to the Large V8 gas engines of 550 and 572 CI engines. I worked around the SV8 series extensively early in my IH career. Sometimes I can’t remember where I set my car keys down 5 minutes ago, but I still remember part numbers from nearly 50 years ago like:. 216359R4 304 and 345 exhaust manifold 309222C1 392 exhaust manifold 151209C3 SV8 water pump 434507C3 392 engine block 217144C2 345 engine block 151023C3 304 engine block |

Quote: Both AMC and IH had 304 CI engines Just like both Chrysler and AMC had 360 V8s…Chevrolet; Oldsmobile; Buick, and Pontiac all had different 350 V8s, and Chrysler had a 350 V8 of their own…Chevrolet had a 305 V8 and GMC had a 305 V6…Chrysler and Ford both had 170 Sixes…

Sure and Ford had a 351 Windsor, 351 Cleveland and a 352 FE, just because they could. |
