What headers do you guys run with your Weber DOCE Intakes?

I Mocked up My EFI / Clifford DCOE Weber Intake and the #6 Intake Hits the Clifford Shorty Header. This piece is nice, and has already been Jet hot or some other ceramic coated so I hate to ding or cut into it to make the next intake for my project work. The header fits fine with the old Clifford 4V intake, but not with this one.

I just was wondering what the other ITB Manifold Guys have going on here?
Ryan / Seymour?
Rick?
Mark?
Stan?
Lou?

Thanks for your help!

I will go through some old pictures. As we know there are several different Webber style intakes.
From what I remember I was running Clifford intake and Clifford shorty headers.

Thanks will, that's what I have but they do not play well together.
I have 3 different clifford intakes in this style, maybe I need to measure and compare to see if one works better than the first one that I tried.
Thank you.

I had a set of Clifford long tubes designed to work with the Weber intake but I also fitted it up with some Clifford shorties that I had and it seemed to work. If you have more than one intake, why don't you see if one of them works with your shorties. Otherwise maybe you could grind some clearance into the manifold.

Never knew there were different Clifford Weber intakes!
Pictures of the differences would be interesting.
Mine has NO numbers or markings on it.
And I have Will's old Barracuda headers, 1 3/4 tube.
There were many weeks of cutting welding, fitting and test fittings to get them to fit.

They fit now, but will build new headers for the 170.

Clifford has a blurb in the old catalogs that they would do a Weber mod on their headers if you ran the Webers.

Seymour / Ryan's car were custom headers.
I run the Redline manifold and the rear 2 tubes had to be re routed

I have 2 sets of Clifford headers that will not even work with the 4 barrel manifold without major re-working! I have no idea what Clifford was doing when they built them! :!: :!:

I heard you ALWAYS have to ding up the headers for the Clifford DCOE intake. Even all the Clifford headers...

I designed and cast 2 different DCOE intakes for other inline engines, and the trick is to machine the head side of the intake flange at a slight angle(to make it rise the closer it gets to the headers) to eliminate that issue. Almost all U-Flow design heads, whether its Ford, Chevy or Dodge have that issue, and that's how you handle it. Greg, you still can correct that issue if you have access to a mill and a large diameter face mill...

That will work, but why would you ever build headers that do not work with your own intakes? It makes no sense but that is Clifford.

I'm going to guess because it's part of the learning curve you go through when you try to make one part fit in conjunction with others. But my guess is the intakes are machined out of parallel to the cylinder head plane and actually tilted downwards. As far as Larry at Clifford goes, that's the problem with having to outsource every aspect of his manufacturing, he has no clue what the issues are when he doesn't have hands on to verify quality assurance....

Clifford's headers seemed to always assume that you need to bend/ding things a little to get them to work with different setups. This was a common mentality when hot rodders mixed and matched many different parts and everyone was used to this. For the Slant and the A-body (especially making it brake/handle well), I always assume I'll need to futz with things to get them to work. That way, if it bolts up and just works (maybe 5-10% of the time), then it's a pleasant surprise. If I didn't want to futz with stuff, I wouldn't be working on racing/modding a Slant 6! It's a wonderful, beautiful, challenging, cut-your-own puzzle...

I will compare my 3 intakes with this header, to see if there is one that fits better than the other. I believe they are all clifford intakes. I am not sure if they are all the same or not. I may just have to get the intake it machined to get the upward angle; I like that idea. This set of headers is nice so I really do not want to be cutting / Grinding / Smashing it up too much.

I will update when time allows.

Greg, did you get any traction on this effort?

Nah, got busy with the wagon and the failed cam lobe in the Grüne Hölle so it will be a while.

I bought a new set of headers to smash up so I don't have to mess up the pretty coated ones!
