Post subject:  Crank-Mounted Fan? *ducks*
Has anyone relocated their cooling fan from the water pump pulley to the crank? Apart from the hassle, is there anything about making an adapter/spacer and bolting the fan onto the harmonic balancer that screams Terrible Idea?

The 1st argument against crankshaft driven fan I found is that the fan will meet all vibrations what the front end of crankshaft will have. At the water pump mounted there is the belt suspending the most of the waves off.

Does those vibrations do harm? Who knows. Probably not but it is possible that the fan will lost its blades suddenly.

I haven't done the math, but what's the ratio between crank RPM and water pump RPM?
Spin a fan too fast, and you might have to duck......literally.

Well, the OE setup has the water pump pulley at or maybe slightly smaller in diameter than the 'crank' pulley (balancer), so the factory setup would have the water pump and fan going at, or slightly higher, than engine RPM.

I do not think this should be a problem. Make sure to make a mount that has the fan axis aligned with the crankshaft axis.

You could use a longer crank bolt and use that to center your assembly.

I made my own oil pump drive using that bolt to center everything up.

The big problem would be the blades hitting the asphalt. You'd have to use a fan that had the normal blade size on top but shorter blades on bottom.

I would eliminate the fan, run the belt to spin the pump and install a thermo switch with an electric fan on the rad.

This would put the fan too low to draw air from the radiator in a normal chassis. Is this some sort of agricultural equipment or another vehicle with an unusually high mounted engine?

An electric fan is the way to go. That's what I did with my slant six roadster since the water pump is off center. I modified an aluminum shroud to work with my grill and radiator setup. I modified an early mustang radiator to fit into a 1916 Dodge Brothers grill. I always have trouble posting photos here but if you want I can send you some on the hamb.

Every intercooled Buick GrandNational used one to cool said intercooler, clutch fan right on the crank, question is how much room Ya got?

*EDIT* It appears to be a fixed composite unit, NOT a clutch-style, after looking at the frt. & rear pics in a sale listing.

Thank you all for the input! I went to drop off some gaskets and catch up with my machinist today.

I agree - that's a risk to consider. I will consult Scott. (He's about to start Dutra-izing the engine block.)

I definitely read your post twice... I think it'll work if I make the short blades a lot heavier and then spin the entire planet (including the car) along the long axis of the motor.

A pusher fan hidden in the nose would do the trick, but I'm trying to stick with an "older build" look.

Plenty of room! Basurati has a big nose. Interesting bit about that Buick V6. I love the late '80s Grand Nationals.
