63 Valiant slant six; engine stopped running. Ran fine one day, the next day I tried to start it and no go.... traced the problem to NO SPARK at the points.. Tested the coil, multimeter showing about 8 volts on the positive side of the coil and nothing at the negative terminal. Using multimeter, found correct resistance valve at the primary circuit and nothing showing when I tested the secondary circuit (red lead to positive terminal on the coil and black lead to the top terminal on the coil.... I bought a new coil and nothing changed.. Still no spark and ran the same resistance test with the exact result as on the first coil. Am I missing something? Is the coil my problem or possibly something else? |

With 8 volts at the coil positive, you should have either 8 volts or 0 volts at the coil negative. If the points are open negative coil should the 8 volts, if the points are closed, should be 0 volts at the coil negative. If you have 0 volts at the coil negative and the point are open, you have a short between the wire from the coil to the distributer or in the dist itself. The points might look like they are open but could still be touching. Many times the problem is the connector on the end of the dist wire (where it is under the nut on the points) touching something in the dist that is grounded. |
