would it be a good idea to pickup another cylinder head and port it or is that something i should wait until after other modifications are done?

It would be a good idea to have a spare head to port, for a couple of reasons:
1. Your car isn't down while you do the work. You can take your time, then do the swap on a free weekend.
2. You can try to find a better head than your car came with. Doc has an article here about head selection.
3. Believe it or not, you might mess up the head - cut into a water passage, gouge a valve seat - and have to get that fixed. If you need the car and only have the one head, you're stuck.
